The Maine School of Science and Mathematics in Limestone, Maine was placed 19th out of all High Schools in the United States by 2017 U.S. News Best High Schools list(“Best High Schools in America, Best High School Rankings, U.S. News”), and I am proud to call it my High School. I found out about this prestigious school from my seventh grade science teacher, whose two sons graduated from MSSM. She advised me to attend a week of the summer camp program held here and I immediately knew, ‘this is where I want to go to school’. My decision to come to MSSM was based on the fact that it is the perfect high school to help me achieve the goals I want to strive for, such as gaining personal growth, creating new experiences, and acquiring a job in a scientific field later on. In coming to MSSM, I hope to switch up the scenery, creating new experiences in a unique environment. MSSM is a drastically different community than the one that I have been a part of for the past 15 years. I got used to the same people, education, and culture that the city of Biddeford provided for me. MSSM, however, provides a unique …show more content…
One of these opportunities is the excellent education provided here at MSSM. Moreover, it offers a chance to be challenged, which is extremely appealing because that was not something I had in the past. I am willing to take advantage of this educational environment and thrive while being challenged at the same time. The list of unique opportunities provided at MSSM include, but are not limited to: honors classes that count for college credit, rigorous curriculum, preparation for college, opportunities for internships, five teachers with Ph.D’s, and a space to make connections with inquisitive teens that have the same interests as you. In this growth I believe that this will eventually lead to a career in science which is something I will strive for at my time here at

Quantum mechanics has always been a field I have admired because of how it sparks curiosity in my analytical side. Just as how I yearn to not just be able to utilize but to understand complex mathematical algorithms, I want to be able to know how quantum mechanics functions in our universe; this field plays a huge role in mankind’s scientific achievements. It is a field with groundbreaking accomplishments that will alter the scientific world as we know it, just like Einstein’s theory of relativity. Additionally, nanotechnology has also been one of my childhood mysteries-…

Mathematics is a universal truth that not even nature can defy; it is logic and it is beauty. Mathematics is found at the core of my life and in the lives of every living thing: shells show off the fibonacci sequence, humans live neverending patterns, every great architectural masterpiece from the Parthenon to Frank Lloyd Wright's houses are built and designed with great mathematical precision. To break from pattern is the only unknown that exists, but it will always show growth and leave room for new experiences. SUMMET has the ability to push me to grow and expand. I should be chosen to attend SUMMET because I am a student that wants to learn, that strives to go beyond high school, and one who will benefit from the furthering of my education.…

Personal Statement Fatima Etemadi Observing first-hand the consequences of a broken healthcare system is the reason why I am writing this essay. It was the case of Masuma, a seemingly strong, healthy 15-year-old patient that made me fully realize the extent of the healthcare problems in my homeland, Afghanistan. She was a neglected patient who died as a result of an infection after a complicated delivery in an unsterile environment. Her life could have been saved easily if basic but systematic health care services had been available.…

As a Colorado native, I spent much time in the mountains, hiking, skiing, camping, and I've developed an admiration for nature. Of my family, I’m the most skilled at spotting wildlife, from brown bears in the neighborhood, tadpoles in ponds, monk seals on beaches (when my mother was convinced it was a rock), to eagles on trees, I've always paid attention to the creatures around me. Eventually in freshman year I began to seriously study the sciences, and the capabilities of applying them. For a group project we had to study a possible treatment for some current problem or disease, and my group chose to research Alzheimer's. Enthusiastically I exploded into action, researching every possible observation made about Alzheimer’s; at the beginning of…
