Ms. Fox English Class Analysis

Decent Essays
Ms. Fox's college English class is hard because it’s a lot of work. A lot of work means multiple things to do each week such as reading and writing every week for the entire semester. According to Fox's syllabus, students can expect about 4 hours of homework each week. Four hours for one class is a lot because students may have other classes and jobs each week. Juggling and making time to do the work is what makes the class hard. Many students did not have much homework in high school and did not have to learn to manage their time. Some students did not have a job in high school but must work while is college, so they never had to make their own schedule or even plan study time. Students in Fox's English class are expected to figure out quickly

How would one describe the normal student? Solely base it off of the student’s physical features and life styles, or the student’s political stand point? In a class survey, the results showed that a normal student in an English 1102 class at Valdosta State University is a first year student between the ages of eighteen and twenty-one that lives in Georgia and believes college is very important. The surveys were split up into three or so categories. One being the Student’s Lifestyle, the second is all about College, Demographics, and Technology, and lastly, it was about Politics and Sex, Dating, and Relationships.…

Karl Taro Greenfield’s article published in the October 2013 issue of The Atlantic discusses the potential drawbacks of a heavy workload on middle school American students, specifically his 13 year old daughter, Esmee. Greenfield addresses these drawbacks by choosing to complete his daughter’s homework for an entire week to truly see how the other half lives. My Daughter’s Homework is Killing Me successfully brings to life the hardships that today’s students face concerning the time the spend on homework and the lack of teacher understanding regarding the topic. Greenfield opens the article by criticizing the school system for the number of hours of homework assigned to his daughter each night. He approaches this argument by comparing it to…

When the competitive gymnast won the title of national champion after all of her hard work, she gave her longtime coach a beatific look. The terrifying behemoth tramped in the direction of the group of tourists as they ran away screaming in horror. In order to persuade her parents to buy her a car, she washed the dishes, walked to school, and took care of her siblings as blandishment.…

The article titled “Class in America--2012” by Gregory Mantsios examines the state of the division of the economy in America, thus creating different classes that separate citizens. The author discusses how Americans sometimes choose to ignore the issue, or are simply ignorant to it. I think that this article is entirely correct. I agree with the standpoint of the author and appreciate the credible sources that he utilizes. Americans today are often misinformed and often oblivious to some harmful economic classes that have developed over time in this country.…

This whole chapter was very interesting. I was kind of saddened in a way to read about so many ways to self destruct. I believe that in this part of the world (the west) we have low standards about how to love our selves, how to love our bodies and to treat our bodies like a temple. In our text book on page 301 there is a table (10-3) that shows the risks and consequences of drug misuse. Regardless of the type of drug that is being abused and or misused there are plenty of consequences and damage to the body.…

Before this course, I did not know grammar well, and what I did know I did not fully understand. Yet, due to taking the course, I learned more about the structure of the English language, and can use grammar better than I did before. For instance, the first three major assignments were filled with missing comas, verb-tense misuses, and run-on sentences. Now, I may still make mistakes, but I know why I have made them. In other English courses, I had grammar homework and reading assignments that, often, seemed to be busy work, but with this course, I did not think that was the case.…

This English 101 class has helped me in variety of ways in gaining and shaping skills in writing. I learned how do compose several types of essays including: professional, informal, casual, cause and effect, and argumentative and was given the format for writing these. Every week, the class was given one of these types of essay to write and throughout the class periods, I would start and finish them. I saw that if I outline these essays with key points of my topic before I officially being writing the first draft, an essay is not difficult to come up with. I would only have to include transitions, which I also learned, and maybe a few more sentences to make my ideas connect properly and flow smoothly.…

Over the course of this semester I learned a lot about myself as a writer. This English 1010 class has really allowed me to expand my essay structure and ways of thinking. When I first started this course, I was scared and didn’t really know what to expect. I branched out to different styles and types of essays as well as incorporating outside sources into my work. When I received my first essay back with the feedback and the grade, I realized that I was not a really good writer.…

However, all students need to understand the difference between in both a high-school and college English class. Every college freshman has to face an English class. It can be a little overwhelming at times for some at first because unlike high-school, where one meets with teachers an hour a day for 5 days a week, in college, students are to meet with their professor 2 or 3 times a week for only 2-3 hours a week. So, students have to adjust themselves to the schedule and…

It feels like so long ago when I first began this English course. I can remember being so excited about the class topic, racism and social justice, which I felt that I had a lot of passion for. Little did I know that I would have to gather up even more enthusiasm and passion to be able to continue writing papers about the same topic all semester long. This course has tested my endurance, and at many times my patience, and for that I am thankful because I know in the end, it has made me a better writer. Despite various minor challenges this semester I believe that I have put in the hard work that it takes and I have achieved the course goals and will complete this class feeling fulfilled and accomplished.…

This forces the students to have to cram to get all the coursework done. Though it seems like a lot of work, if students spread the work out throughout the week, it won’t seem to be that much. Throughout the entirety of this English 101 course, I have seen my skills as a writer grow. In the beginning of the school year, my writing fell short of my expectations, but as I continued to work and learn the principles of writing, I have written papers that I am proud to say are mine. Among the aspects of my writing I have improved, the best strives are seen within my my counter arguments and overall strength and coherency of my papers. To begin, when looking at a paper I wrote in August on necessity of first drafts, there were large gaps in my elaboration, bringing concerns as to whether I was arguing and proving a point or merely summarizing what Lamott, the author of the article, originally said. When attempting to argue my evidence, I stated,…

In high school I was exposed to a lot of writing and reading from grades nine all the way through twelve. I learned how to write through literature for the most part but I also learned by building from the ground up. Through high school from freshman year through senior year we wrote 2-3 papers a semester. In my high school English class we did a lot of learning and writing through textbooks, and novels, and what was going on in the world around us.…
