Ms. Diane's Nursing Career

Ms. Diane loved school and returning to the classroom as a student to “hit the books” would not be an issue. Her first step to starting her new career was finding a suitable school. In the early 60s communities college such as Chattanooga State Community College did not exist; morever, she chose to attend Cleveland State to start her nursing career. When she completed all her preriquisites to nursing, she applied for the nursing program and was ecstatic when her acceptance letter arrived. The following semester she started nursing school, and it was the beginning of a long successful career. “I enjoyed the school part but when it came to clinicals I must admit I was intimated”. Around the time Ms. Diane was in nursing school Cleveland State Community College had a clean reputation for passing the boards; they would wash out anyone whose classroom and clinicals scores were not satisfying standing. To be classified as satisfying in the nursing program one must have A’s and B’s in clinicals and classroom work. Only thirty-five out of eighty whom started the class finished and graduated with their associates degree in nursing. Ms. Dianedescribes her first experience in the operation room as an overwhelming one. She recalls the surgery patient as an overweight lady [who was going to have her gallbladder removed] as very sweet and nice to her. When the anesthetiologist put the patient in general anesthetia Ms. Diane felt that the lady "was exposed, naked, and under general anesthesia while the staff started mocking her for being “so fat” and ugly. Ms. Diane explained she was upset at the way the clinical staff was mocking the lady, but felt impotent because she was the “new girl”, and did not want to cause any issues on her first day by standing up to the clinical
