I have chosen to enter the profession of social work because I want to help people who are suffering from mental illness and who are underserviced when it comes to getting help for mental illnesses. By working with a distressed person to become better, not only will I be able to enhance their life, but also the community will transform into a more positive place. I view transformation as a ripple effect, where changing the situation for one person eventually causes a change in the majority. This is especially true when it comes to mental illness and the stigma that surrounds it. I have been highly involved in mental health work on my college campus since my sophomore year.…

This was a hard movie for me to watch because I struggle with watching such overt racism. It disturbs me to see such unnecessary violence at the hands of the people we are supposed to trust to protect and serve us. I do not suffer from anxiety very often, but this movie made me very anxious. Seeing such brutality and people begging for their lives for no obvious reason is beyond something I can understand. Discrimination and racism, have always been hard for me to comprehend because I grew up in a very diverse neighborhood in Madison.…

The most important aspect for social workers in my opinion is to promote positive change. We help provide opportunities and resources for children, adults, elderly and families that weren’t there before. Social workers do what they can to assist individuals, but they also understand that the individual needs to be willing to make changes.…

Reflection is, “serious thought or consideration” (Google, 2015). When looking-up the definition to reflection there were several synonyms referenced; thought, thinking, consideration, mediation, and pondering. A self-definition of reflection is to give thought of past incidents, situations, and/or problems. Reflection gives an individual the ability to give thought to situations he or she has already encountered, how it was encountered, and question if there should be a change. Recently, I had a learning experience from my internship that will help me even more in my pursuit in the field of social work. The day that this event occurred it helped me be able to be the teacher rather than the student to my intern advisors. Being that Voyage house is a support program for clients, we help to provide them with the necessities of food and household items from those that have no income. Therefore, we take them to Walmart and give them a budget that they are able to work with since they only need to provide resources just for them to living off. This was on a Friday where I had to miss group because I had something to do at school that morning; therefore, I just met my intern advisor later that day at Walmart.…
