Ms. Abracadabra Case Study Nursing

Ms. Abracadabra is a 23-year-old partnered, Somali woman who lives at RS Eden, an intensive outpatient chemical dependency treatment facility. Ms. Abracadabra was referred for therapy by her licensed alcohol and drug counselor (LADC). Ms. Abracadabra reports she is now seeking therapeutic services because she feels that it will help her along with her course of CD treatment. Ms. Abracadabra states “its part of the process.” Ms. Abracadabra recently entered the CD treatment facility and is newly sober. Ms. Abracadabra has an extensive history of chemical dependency. She reports that she began smoking marijuana and drinking alcohol at 11-years of age. In addition to her marijuana and drinking, at the age of 15 or 16, Ms. Abracadabra began experimenting with ecstasy, cocaine, and Vicodin. She also reports a history of abusing Percocet and other opiates following the birth of her only child. The course of Ms. Abracadabra’s CD use has landed her in RS Eden, her first CD treatment program.

Abracadabra did not develop a healthy attachment to any of her caregivers. Physical and emotional safety is first experienced via a parent/caregiver, in the case of Ms. Abracadabra, she lacked the support from her parents/caregivers that would have provided her with a sense of belonging and security. Her childhood left her susceptible to an increased amount of stress. Ms. Abracadabra experienced overwhelming stress in her childhood through frequent moves, abusive caregivers, and exposure to both physical and sexual violence. This trauma ultimately impacted her ability to effectively communicate her feelings and needs. Ms. Abracadabra missed the support of a trusted parent/caregiver to help her regulate emotions, and as a result, has trouble controlling and expressing emotions. Ms. Abracadabra reported past behavior problems in school, including suspensions for fighting, arguing, and skipping classes, likely a result of her trauma
