In Revelation, Mrs. Turpin represents a very superficial woman who judges people based off of their social class and general appearance. She believes herself to be deserving of absolute respect and having supreme importance over others. She gives people her opinion, whether it be kind or awful, as if it were her civic duty. She even fantasizes about having conversations with God, where she must sacrifice her prominent social status to become either a black person or white trash. Mrs Turpin is someone who has believed this all her life. She faithfully follows her values and religious beliefs, and she shows kindness to black people because “you got to love them if you want them to work for you” (O’Connor 383). Mrs Turpin is not merely a hypocrite who patronizes those around her, she is someone who has lived her entire life believing that she is the better human being. Since childhood, these values have molded Mrs. Turpin’s personality and outlook of the world. They have led her to have the life she has made for herself, and she has never questioned her beliefs until she encounters Mary
