She cares about what is taught in schools because she is a Christian woman that feels the teaching of science is a “destructive force which will destroy our civilization”. She feels that what is taught in schools is important because it is protecting the children.

Mrs. Sparks might believe that evolution is such a threat because of her own faith. As a devout Christian she believes that the Bible teaches the way of god and the science behind evolution is against her beliefs. She may also believe if they are in the schools teaching the children about a scientific belief instead of the Bible, it will cause a change in the religious structure of the country.

• I think they applauded because he made a powerful speech that they supported. They wanted people to have an open mind after a war with so many deaths and this is the way they thought they would get it, by teaching both and allowing choice.
