(Prompt 3) People run around like well-oiled machines. Their brains compute the actions they take, and their bodies follow the courses they chart. What happens, though, when there’s a glitch in the system? How can we stand firm against what’s inside our own minds and hearts? My mother taught me how to be strong, just as An-Mei Hsu’s mother does in The Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan.…
In “The Possibility of Evil” by Shirley Jackson, Miss Strangeworth is a perfectionist. For example, in the story, it illustrates quite well that Miss Strangeworth is absolutely horrified at the thought of her roses anywhere other than where she herself put them exactly. Another example is, the fact that Miss Strangeworth must be reminded every Tuesday that it is Tuesday by the marked man testifies to the fact that Miss Strangeworth is a very ocd woman. Among other things, when Miss Chandler didn’t take much time on her hair Miss Strangeworth became annoyed. This implies that she would prefer someone with perfect hair.…

After reading and reviewing information on Sarah Good I was able to create a portrait of her that represents her as she is described in history. In many excerpts of Sarah Good she is described as being “filthy” or even as an “old hag” so, I portrayed Good with flies flying around her, scruff marks, as well as a wrinkled forehead. Because Good and her family were said to be poor and beggars, she is wearing a simple dress. I have also included a symbol of hands begging for bread to represent this. Another description of Good said that she lived detached from society.…
Critical Lens Essay Harper Lee, in her novel To Kill a Mockingbird wrote, “You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view... Until you climb inside of his skin and walk around in it.” In other words, to fully understand someone’s point of view, you must put yourself into their situation. This statement holds true in most literary settings, as to make sense of a character’s actions and thought process; you must consider their situation and their past experiences.…

The Crucibles “Abigail Williams” Abigail Williams takes a mayor part in The Crucibles as her character is driven down to be the main antagonist of the plot. Abigail’s character would be noted as the least complex, compared to the rest of the characters in the play. She is clearly driven by revenge towards anyone that stands on her path to fame. Much like her uncle, Mr. Parris, minister of the Salem church, a very peculiar man, compared to any other man in the town if Salem.…
The protagonist again exhibits insecurity in regard to his wife when she looks at him in the middle of a conversation with Robert and he deduces that “she didn’t like what she saw” (737). This is uncharacteristically in-tune for the narrator to say, as he usually does not seem to pick up on the feelings of others. However, because he assumes it is her judgment of him he is willing to read…

Many studies show what personality traits can affect schizophrenia. John Forbes Nash Jr. showed an interesting personality trait that amplified his schizophrenic disorder. According to Capps (2004), his narcissism not only intensified his schizophrenia, but it helped in his recovery or repression of his schizophrenia. The movie, A Beautiful Mind, attempts to convey the life of Nash in a way that is understandable to all. The movie begins while he is in graduate school at Princeton University and it goes throughout his life, showing his falling in love with his wife, the birth of their first son, and his first admittance into a mental hospital.…

Life in Context – The Developmental Analysis of Dwayne Hoover The most important developmental task adolescents’ face is the formation of a sense of identity (Erickson, 1968). Identity is a powerful construct, it aids in finding life paths and in making decisions (Schwartz et al., 2011) it defines who people are, and is constructed in the context of the environment around them, and their interactions with society (Erickson, 1968; Ibáñez-Alfonso, Sun, & Van Schalkwyk, 2016). However, identity formation does not happen neatly (Marcia, 1966) and the present essay examines the character Dwayne Hoover as his search for identity as his character develops throughout the movie Little Miss Sunshine. Character Description Dwayne is an adolescent,…
