My first song is Mrs. Potato Head by Melanie Martinez. I personally love this song. It is about how the expectations of women is to get plastic surgery and wear a bunch of makeup to look pretty. The singer probably sang this because they were facing discrimination for not being what the world describes as “pretty”. She says, “No one will love you if you’re unattractive”. She’s most likely experienced what it’s like to not feel pretty, and then people tell you that you need to “change” what you look like. My second song is Rolling in the Deep by Adele. Potato Head there are some lyrics that say, “They stick pins in you like a vegetable”. It’s saying, that we will go through pain and needles to change what we are. We go through physical pain to turn into something that is not us. It also says, “It’s only some plastic”. This is implying that all women go through it so often, that now we only see it as something as small as “some plastic” or only “some fake” in us, like it’s not a bad thing. It also says, “And a hundred thousand dollars for some compliments”. This means that we spend enormous amounts of money on plastic surgery and makeup, and all we get in return is a couple compliments. In Rolling in the Deep, it says, “There’s a fire starting in my heart”. There’s not a physical fire starting in her heart, it’s expressing that she is full of anger, and sorrow. I can see the image of her stomping around and screaming because of the pain. It also states, “ turn my sorrow into treasured gold”. This is implying that he doesn’t care for her feelings, and is bringing himself up on her
