Mrs. P is a 43-year-old woman with a “shoulder pain that keeps getting worse” for the duration of six months. Mrs. P’s health was typical until about six months ago when she noticed the onset of deep aching pain that radiates from the left shoulder to the upper left back and the upper left arm. The patient has never had shoulder pain or pain in any other part of the body previously. On a scale of 1 to 10, the pain initially started out as a 4 and for that reason, the patient did not deem it necessary to seek medical help. However, in the last six months the pain has worsened and is currently an 8 out of 10. The pain seems to get worse when Mrs. P has to sit at her desk in her officer for extended periods of time and when she is trying to sleep.

P has tried applying hot packs and sleeping without a pillow, but neither helped the pain. While in India for a vacation 2 months ago, Mrs. P saw an orthopedic surgeon who prescribed an ointment named “Volitra” that seemed to provide some relief but the pain keeps recurring. Besides the shoulder pain, Mrs. P denies any other associated symptoms.
