Mrs Mathabane Quotes

Mrs. Mathabane is a very influential role model in Mark’s life. She knows what it takes to be successful in life though she is not educated. She wants the best for her children and she is very loving and caring for them. She has seen what failure has done to her husband and she does not want Mark or any of her children to end up that way the father did. She is very passionate for her children and she will do whatever possible to make them succeed. She takes multiple jobs, works extra hours, and maintains the house in order to provide for her children and their futures.

“‘I want you to have a future, child,’ my mother said. ‘And, contrary to what your father says, school is the only means to a future. I don’t want you growing up to be like

The fact that she said that she would sacrifice even her life for her children, shows how much love she has for them. She wants the best for her children and in order to achieve that, she has to find jobs to suffice for them and their futures.

“I would miss you more than anyone else. I too would want to die if you were to die. You’re the only hope I have. I love you very much,” said Mama (169).

This quote demonstrates another example of how passionate the mother is of her children. The mother says this when Mark is on the verge of committing suicide. She expresses how much love she has for Mark to the full extent by saying that she would want to die if Mark were to die. This quote is very significant for that Mark now knows he has a very compassionate mother to look up too when he is in times of depression.

“Maybe if you’d been saving all these years you’ve been working, instead of squandering money on liquor and dice, you’d have long become your own boss. Who knows, you might even be a millionaire. You have brains, Jackson, I will tell you that. But you choose not to use them. Whatever happened to that ambitious, hardworking, thrifty family man who swept me off my feet thirteen years ago? The man who once vowed to make it despite what white people told him?” said Mama

Other character’s speech, thoughts, feelings, and actions can also show a person’s guilt. “Miss Claythorne was wonderful- kept her head- started off swimming after Cyril at once.” (pg.140). This quote showed part of Vera’s guilt, because of the fact that no one ever questioned whether or not she was guilty Vera didn’t confess to intentionally killing Cyril. To add, Vera was praised and thanked for being levelheaded but in the end she felt even more guilt because she never confessed to causing Cyril’s…

In the novel “Small Great Things” by Jodi Picoult, the main character Ruth Jefferson demonstrates many acts of our school motto, “Leadership, Honor, Courage” in many different ways. Ruth is an African American labor and delivery nurse, who has been working at Mercy-West Haven Hospital for 20 years. She has always struggled with racism ever since she was little. When Ruth is put in charge of watching and caring for baby David, who was delivered a couple of hours before her shift, she soon realizes that the mother and father of David, Turk and Brittany Bauer are white supremacists. When Ruth was told she was not able to care for David, she was upset, but accepted it.…

    Mildred Important Quotes

    • 268 Words
    • 2 Pages

There are also some characters in this book like Mildred, Mildred’s friends and Beatty that conform to society's rules and don’t have a valuable opinion about important subjects in life. For example, Mrs. Phelps said “I’ll let Pete do all the worrying, Not me. I’m not worried” (Bradbury 91) This proves that she has no concern for the war or her husband's health. This quote is also important because it shows us that people are so consumed in technology and in having “fun”, that they don’t pay attention to much more important subjects in life like for example wars.…

Quote: We chose this quote because it showed how evil Madam Defarge is towards the aristocrats. Lucid and Little Lucid are condemned to death (registers in the knitting) by Madam Defarge merely because of association with an aristocrat. This quote shows the contrast between Madame Defarge and Lucie and how Madame Defarge's evil makes Lucie look purer and vice versa. The quote shows that there have been many years of suffering for the wives and mothers of peasants, this is how she justifies killing a mother and child. Madame Defarge asks why should Lucie be saved from their suffering if all the women before her were not saved from suffering?…

“The part of us that has to be burned away is something like the deadwood on the bush; it has to go, to be burned in the terrible fire of reality, until there is nothing left but… what we are meant to be” (Dekker 1). This is the quote the authors choose as a preface to the story, which I believe fits perfectly with the theme about acceptance of the darker side of your personality. All teenager Janeal Mikkado wants is to leave her gypsy home, and heritage, behind and make a life for herself. Lifetime criminal Salazar Sanso apprehends her and coerces her into a deal - he will spare Janeal's father, who is making a deal with the DEA, if Janeal can find the $1 million her father is hiding. This leads to a fiery confrontation, which transforms…

Women’s roles in professional settings are very controversial. Should they be at home with their family, should they be working, or should they do both? In “Lean In: What Would You Do If You Weren’t Afraid?” by Sheryl Sandberg, “Why Women Still Can’t Have It All” by Anne-Marie Slaughter, and “Why men still can’t have it all” by Richard Dormant they all show us their differing opinions on whether women can truly “have it all”, whether women are treated equal to men in the work world, and whether men should play a greater role at home so their wives can work a fulfilling job without having to take on all the responsibility at home.…

The author creates a story where she gives the readers a realistic view of the struggle Afro- American families had to go through. As the family waits for a $10,000 check, each family member has an idea of what they want to accomplish with the money. Mama, the matriarch of the family dreams of acquiring a house in a white neighborhood, her son, Walter wants to open up a liquor store, and become a business man. Beneatha, Mama’s daughter wished to spend the money on medical school, but most importantly, she desired that her family would give up the idea of joining the white world. Furthermore, in the story each member struggles with racism as shown when Walter tells Mama, “Sometimes when I’m downtown and I pass them cool-quiet-looking restaurants where them white boys are sitting back and…

In “A Raisin in the Sun,” by Lorraine Hansberry we are introduced to the Younger Family, an African-American family residing on the south side of Chicago during the 1950s. Each individual has a dream of how they would like to better themselves in order to eventually help their family. Mama wants a bigger home, Bennie wants to become a doctor and Walter wants to open his own business, are their dreams truly selfless or selfish. Their difference of opinion and failure to understand one another’s feelings and desires is one of the biggest issues the family must overcome. During the 1950s the typical “American dream” was depicted as the happy family, consisting of father, mother, and children, in a home with a yard, and a nice car.…

The first theme is Little Women is the necessity of work for balance and functioning. According to the text, “As the height of luxury, Meg put out some of her sewing, and then found time hung so heavily that she fell to snipping and spoiling her clothes in her attempts to furbish them up a la Moffat. Jo read till her eyes gave out and she was sick of books, got so fidgety that even good natured Laurie had a quarrel with her, and so reduced in spirits that she desperately wished she had gone with Aunt March.” (Alcott, 116) If the lack of work makes the March girls act in disrespectful or hurtful ways, then work is just as important for functioning as luxury.…
