The author of “The Story of an Hour” sets up the scene in spring. Spring oughts to be positive and energetic. Everything starts to grow up in a brand new year. When the main character Mrs. Mallard hears about her husband’s death. She acts differently than the normal people. No crying, no screaming, who would rather be alone. As Mallard sees through the window in her room “ the tops of trees that were all quiver with the new spring life”(27), “a peddler was crying his wares”(27) and “countless sparrows were twittering in the eaves”(27). The springtime forms a strong contrast with the man’s death. Mallard thinks her life is hopeless; however, the nature, the people and the animals are still running. Nothing else is being changed by the death.

The five stories I had chosen were “Sweat,” “Reunion,” “A Rose for Emily,” “The Story of an Hour,” and “The Yellow Wallpaper. The last point that she symbolizes in the short story The Story of an Hour is how freedom and the blue sky through the window relate to each other. An open and closed window symbolizes closure and when it is opened it seems as if she is set free. Mrs. Mallard was unhappy in her marriage and felt as if she was trapped which is how the storm and the closed window portrayed as in the story. As soon as her husband “dies” the storm clears up and she states that “there was something coming to her and she was waiting for it, fearfully. What was it?…

“The Story of an Hour”, is the story it is because of the time period. Mrs. Mallard was tired of being the everyday housewife. There are a few examples of symbolism, such as, Mrs. Mallard’s heart disease, when Mrs. Mallard looks out the window and sees the spring time and blue skies, and the armchair that she went and sat in when she ran upstairs to be by herself. There was two types of irony used in the story. Situational irony was used when Josephine was scared that Mrs.…

Despite of being a woman living in the 19th century, Kate Chopin’s works often depict the images of young, beautiful, sensitive, and intelligent women who seek freedom and professional independence. The Story of an Hour, The Storm and Desiree’s Baby are three of her many short stories that portray women who live miserably in their marriage. This journal will be focusing in discussing the themes found in these three stories. The main theme in The Story of an Hour is the forbidden joy of freedom. For Mrs. Mallard, freedom is a pleasure that can only be imagined privately in which it seems that it would take her whole life for it to become real.…

In Chopin’s “The Story of an Hour”, Mrs. Mallard is described as a “Goddess of Victory” as she comes down the stairs from isolating herself in her room. She is described this way because she is victorious in the fact that she is accepting and content with being independent. She also does not resemble a Goddess of Victory because she lost her loved one, financial support, and husband. When the doctors tell the Mallard family that Mrs. Mallard died from “the joy that kills”, we can see the irony because joy doesn’t usually cause death. The situation is also ironic because Mr. Mallard was the one previously presumed dead but now Mrs. Mallard is the one dead.…

As I went through reading both of these stories whether it was “Story of an Hour” or “Sweat” I found out that Mrs. Mallard and Delia each live a very constrained life, but not in the same way. In “Story of an Hour” Mrs. Mallard suffers from a severe heart condition, and in “Sweat” Delia lives a rough life having to deal with her husband Syke’s all the time. They each have a different psychological and emotional response to their situation. It is difficult to compare these two women, because as you will see there are many differences between these two women. Then again there are also similarities as well.…
