It was Josephine’s husband friend, Richard who was there at the newspaper office when the story of the railroad accident was brought in. Despite the news, she took the news fairly well and was joyous. Although, what made her “die of happiness” was that as she was going down the stairs in a triumphant manner, her husband appeared through the doorway and she could not believe what she had seen.…

The story of an hour by Kate Chopin furrowed my brow upon reading the first paragraph because of the context and format. It had a choppy introduction that I had to read and re read several pieces to get an understanding of what was happening. The story twisted at the end when Mrs. Mallard is the one who actually ends up dying instead of her spouse. From reading the story I’m not sure Mrs. Mallard was sad about her husband’s so called death or happy she no longer had to be married. When she realized her life would no longer revolve with her spouse she felt free.…

As I went through reading both of these stories whether it was “Story of an Hour” or “Sweat” I found out that Mrs. Mallard and Delia each live a very constrained life, but not in the same way. In “Story of an Hour” Mrs. Mallard suffers from a severe heart condition, and in “Sweat” Delia lives a rough life having to deal with her husband Syke’s all the time. They each have a different psychological and emotional response to their situation. It is difficult to compare these two women, because as you will see there are many differences between these two women. Then again there are also similarities as well.…
