The story is taken place in the 1890s, which effects the story a lot. “The Story of an Hour”, is the story it is because of the time period. Mrs. Mallard was tired of being the everyday housewife. There are a few examples of symbolism, such as, Mrs. Mallard’s heart disease, when Mrs. Mallard looks out the window and sees the spring time and blue skies, and the armchair that she went and sat in when she ran upstairs to be by herself. There was two types of irony used in the story. Situational irony was used when Josephine was scared that Mrs.
