Mrs. Mallard In Chopin's The Story Of An Hour

Improved Essays
In Chopin’s “The Story of an Hour”, Mrs. Mallard is described as a “Goddess of Victory” as she comes down the stairs from isolating herself in her room. She is described this way because she is victorious in the fact that she is accepting and content with being independent. She also does not resemble a Goddess of Victory because she lost her loved one, financial support, and husband. When the doctors tell the Mallard family that Mrs. Mallard died from “the joy that kills”, we can see the irony because joy doesn’t usually cause death. The situation is also ironic because Mr. Mallard was the one previously presumed dead but now Mrs. Mallard is the one dead. The audience and family of Mrs. Mallard also does not expect to see Mr. Mallard because

Broadcast in 1985 by Tina Rathborne, “A Joy that Kills” is the movie adaptation of “Story of an Hour” by Kate Chopin. Both book and film are set in the 19th century and center on the protagonist Louis Mallard. The heart troubles experienced by Mrs. Mallard play an important role in both the film and literary version. There’s a strong semblance of repression from both the film and book, however, the restrictions experienced by Mrs. Mallard in the film seems to be more particular to her character than the universal feelings of subjugation through marriage for women in the 19th century that the book conveys. Minor characters such as Josephine and Richard are present in the film as well, carrying out similar roles to their literary counterparts.…

Mrs. Mallard was simply unhappy with the way that her life was decided for her and that her husband had so much impact on her choices without her approval and there was no way to change that. Her life was over; only it had just begun. In “The Story of an Hour” Chopin tells a short story based on the news and reaction of Mrs. Louise Mallard after learning of her husband’s death. Mrs. Mallard was not unhappy due to the physical aspect of the marriage but unhappy due to the emotional and mental aspects.…

The last point that she symbolizes in the short story The Story of an Hour is how freedom and the blue sky through the window relate to each other. An open and closed window symbolizes closure and when it is opened it seems as if she is set free. Mrs. Mallard was unhappy in her marriage and felt as if she was trapped which is how the storm and the closed window portrayed as in the story. As soon as her husband “dies” the storm clears up and she states that “there was something coming to her and she was waiting for it, fearfully. What was it?…

Chopin also reveals in her story about Mrs. Mallard, “It was only yesterday she had thought with a shudder that life might be long” (41). This shows how Mrs. Mallard was thinking about a life with Brently Mallard and how it was going to be long. This statement might be hinting that Mrs. Mallard was dreading life with Brently Mallard because she did not want to be with him. The ironic aspect in the “goddess of victory” phrase is that Mrs. Mallard feels as if she has won the life she has dreamed of without her husband (41). Her emotions are now to the point where she feels no more sadness, but above the emotional state where she was at the beginning of the story.…

Mrs.Mallard had a home, a family, and the most important thing of all, love. A kind man that gave nothing but love to make her feel happy, but no matter how much kindness he gave her, she always felt trapped in a cage. In the 3rd paragraph she cries to her sister only to go to herroom to be alone and enjoy her comfortable chair. “She could see in the open square before her house the tops of trees that were all quivered with the new spring life.” this means that her life was to start a new where she could be free to do as she wishes.…

When Mr. Mallard walks through the door and Mrs. Mallard discovers her husband is alive and well, she suddenly dies herself. Mrs. Mallard’s death is ironic in several ways. First, no one expected Mrs. Mallard to collapse to her death. Instead, she was supposed to have a new beginning in life. Second, the characters in the story believe that she is so over joyed that her husband is still alive that the joy killed her.…

In the short story by author Kate Chopin, “the Story of an Hour”, the main character shows her true feelings about her marriage after a false report about her husband’s death. Many readers of the audience point that Mrs. Mallard died from the joy of her husband’s arrival but an important aspect that is often overlooked is the ironic juxtaposition set up by the author to truly show her feelings. Mrs. Mallard was not in shock of joy but she was in shock of utter disappointment that ultimately lead to her death. Through the discrete details of their marriage, the author writes the message of marriage and love during this era in the American society. Through the actions of the main character, it is clear that her cause of death was because of…

When Mrs. Mallard dies at the end, however, the doctors assume it is from “joy that kills” (Chopin). This is an example of dramatic irony because the reader knows it wasn’t joy at seeing her husband alive that killed Mrs. Mallard but disappointment at seeing that he’s not dead. In this moment she realizes has lost her freedom from her husband and marriage. It was the lack of these, her husband and marriage, that allowed her to feel free, changing from repressed to independent, and it is their reappearance that returns her to such repression that she dies because of it.…

The Story of An Hour - Literary Analysis Marriage in the 1800’s was essentially an idea of a woman being the man’s property. In “The Story of An Hour,” Chopin represents a negative view of marriage by portraying a woman’s relief and joy upon her husband’s death, resulting in the examination of a female’s self-discovery of identity that was lost while fulfilling the role of a good wife. Chopin presents this through the setting of the text as Mrs.Mallard’s emotions transition from numbness to newfound joy. “The Story of An Hour” communicates the transition of a soul moving from being trapped in a cage of domesticity, like a small bird, to of the free, spring world, showing that nature and the soul are connected, as shown through the different…

Firstly, she creates a climatic twist when Mrs. Mallard’s husband returns home. It shatters Mrs. Mallard’s vision of her new life, and results in a tragic ending; “When the doctors came they said she had died of heart disease – of joy that kills.” (289). It is essential that she is portrayed that way because it allows the reader to visualize the irony in this situation; she didn’t die of joy that the doctor’s had presumed, but rather the loss of joy was too much for her to carry. As well, when Mrs. Mallard is in her room pondering about her long life ahead of her as she “opened and spread her arms out to them in welcome.…

The dramatic and verbal irony in the story is how the death is diagnosed as "joy that kills" (477). Obviously, Mrs. Mallard did not die from joy, but the actual outrage that went through her after realizing her husband was alive, and her life was not going to change. Another example, is when Josephine, Mr. Mallard’s sister, thinks she is grieving her husband’s death she is actually rejoicing, “When she abandoned herself a little whispered word escaped.... "free, free, free!"(477). [This is a good use of an integrated…
