In Langston Hughes' short story "Thank You Ma'am," the reader sees that Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones has many personality characteristics. First, she is very understanding. She tells Roger that when she was younger she was not proud of. Next, she is bossy. She catches Roger trying to take her purse and she yells at him to pick up her purse, she demands he washes his face, and eat food. Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones is also very kind. Even after Roger tries stealing her purse she still lets him into her home, feeds him, and gives him money. All these different things make Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones who she is.
