“The world is a contradiction; the universe a paradox.” ( Kedar Joshi). A Doll house is a play written by Henrik Ibsen. A major 19th-century Norwegian poet, playwright, and theatre director. Ibsen is the founder of Modernism in theatre. In A Doll House, Mrs Linde and Nora’s characters contradict each other.
Nora and Mrs. Linde move in directly opposite paths over the course of the play. Mrs. Linde is an independent women without any obligations to family. Mrs Linde has lived a life of exertion and hardship."My mother was alive then, and was bedridden and helpless, and I had to provide for my two younger brothers; so I did not think I was justified in refusing his offer."(pg) …show more content…
Linde brings a better understanding of Nora is that they are parallel in characters. Both character’s are willing to sacrifice themselves for those whom they value. Nora’s act of aiding Torvald allows readers a better understanding of her character. Mrs. Linde shows her devotion to her family when she did not think that she “had the right” to refuse her husband’s marriage proposal. She only got married to a person whom she truly didn't love because of her family's health issues. After considering her sick mother, her brothers and Krogstad not having any money, she got married for the benefit of her family. For both Nora and Mrs Linde family is top priority. To the women in this era, loyalty to their loved ones is very common and highly expected. Nora also saves her husband (Torvald’s) life. Which portrays the trend of women sacrificing for their families. Mrs. Linde feels more superior to Nora because she feels that Nora never had to work hard in her life. Nore is still somewhat like a child and inexperienced in the real world. Nora does not know much about the world and that if she is to learn, then she will have to experience that for herself. “I have been performing tricks for you, Torvald. That’s how I’ve survived. You wanted it like that. You and Papa have done me a great wrong. It’s because of you I’ve made nothing of my life.”(pg) Nora speaks these words, which express the truth that she has realized about her marriage to Torvald. She
