Mrs. Latta

Mrs. Latta was my 8th grade English Teacher. She was a wonderful teacher, but an even more significant example of character. She had been teaching for almost 30 years when I had her my 8th grade year. Some teachers seem to lose interest and focus when they reach the age where retirement is right around the corner, but that was not the case with Mrs. Latta. She was the type of person who set goals for herself. She modeled what it was to be responsible. She would tell us every day to set one personal goal whether it be to get all of our homework done on time, or to set the table for dinner before our parents had to ask. Each day that she reminded us to set out goals, she would tell us what her goal for the day was. Even now when I get …show more content…
Latta was a Christian lady and I know that now because I have talked with her about it since I started teaching, but she never told us in words that she was a Christian while we were in her class. I simply knew because of the way she carried herself. She taught us right from wrong by her every day actions. She respected us and expected that same respect in return. I never heard he talk negatively about a student and I very rarely heard any students speak badly of her. That speaks wonders about her character because she was not only able to gain the respect of her students while they were in her classroom, but also while they were away. Mrs. Latta did not tolerate dishonesty. If a student was cheating in her classroom, they got a zero. If a student lied about something and she found out about it, they served detention. I even remember one specific incident where a student was lying to another student about what happened to their pencil case while they were in the bathroom. Mrs. Latta knew the student was lying and sent home a note for the student’s parents to sign. I don’t think he ever lied in front of Mrs. Latta again. Mrs. Latta was a person of great character. Her responsible attitude, kind heart, respectful nature, honesty policies, and moral values taught me many lessons as an 8th grader. Those lessons have stayed with me for many years. They are now things that I try to implement in my own

A Desire of the Heart Shirley and I were married between the Arts and Theology years of university so our financial resources were very tight. I was working on a tree nursery farm just south of Winnipeg for the summer months between semesters as well as preparing for a move to seminary in Saskatoon. This was hardly enough time for my face to heal from all the mosquito bites I had acquired while riding a tree planter in the Red River Valley in prime pest season. The only way as planters we could survive was by wearing winter jackets with the hoods pulled tightly around the face.…
