Mrs. Jones is a nice, caring women that helps and cares for a boy named Roger even though he tried to steal from her. (Hughes Page 1). Mrs. Jones helps Roger by feeding him a meal and having him wash his face. (Hughes Page 2). In the story Mrs. Jones says “Then Roger you go to that sink and wash your face,” and “Then we’ll eat, I believe you're hungry-or been hungry-to try and snatch my pocketbook.” (Hughes Page 2). Mrs. Jones welcomes this teenager named Roger into her home even after he tried to steal her pocketbook. She feeds him and helps him look presentable by having him wash his face and giving him a clean towel. She gave him half of a cake and some ham. She also said that she all he had to do ask and she would have given him money. This shows that she was willing to give a complete stranger money to buy shoes. She also taught him a lesson. She said “And next time, do not make the mistake of latching onto my pocketbook nor anybody else’s-because shoes come by the devilish like that will burn your feet” What she is saying is that if you get something you want by stealing them or stealing the money to get them it will backfire.
