Upon learning that she was approaching her death, Atticus recalled her determination, explaining, “‘... she was going to leave this world beholden to nothing and nobody. Jem, when you’re sick as she was, it’s all right to take anything to make it easier, but it wasn’t all right for her. She said she meant to break herself of it before she died, and that’s what she did” (115). Mrs. Dubose thought that is was better to die free of the clutches of any substance, and although breaking her addiction was painful and hard, she gathered the courage and resilience to endure her pain through to the end. Her courage came from her pride and willfulness, as she refused to be dependent on a drug. Lee uses a clear character vs. self conflict, With Mrs Dubose fighting her own want for release from pain. Her triumph exemplified her courage, as she refused to give in to her pain in order to be independent, or in her own words, free. Jem and Scout learned from this that regardless of who is or is not affected, what is right should always be done. Facing pain, however, was not the only part of Mrs Dubose’s courage.
