Mrs. Henry Lafayette Dubose's determination defines the nature of courage. When told she has only months left to live, Mrs. Dubose decides to rid herself of her morphine addiction. In the process, she suffers terrible fits and great physical pain. Atticus Finch epitomises her by declaring her, "...the bravest person I ever knew." He defines courage as, "It's when you know you're licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what." Mrs. Dubose embodies this definition because she knows her death is soon to occur, with or without addiction. Yet, she chooses to struggle for her independence, deifying the deceiving bliss morphine offers.
