While observing at P.S 105 X in The Bronx, Mrs. Downs’s second grade classroom is a surprisingly calm, regular classroom with 25 students. The classroom was filled with the students, teacher and paraprofessional. Usually, there is another co-teacher in the classroom; however, she was on maternity leave. When entering the classroom, I could see on the other side of the room, against the windows the wall was filled with books, as well as bins in the back of the classroom. The wall is switched out each month with different books that go along with the unit. Above the window’s hung posters of student’s work relating to literacy essential questions. The opposite wall was a word wall filled with words from A-Z. As the students put away their belongings, their first task is to put away their books they took home with them and pick out two new ones, which they had a bag labeled “Book Buddy.” The students prepared for the first lesson of the day, which was reading.
The students have been learning about Fairytales, and currently were focusing on Hansel and Gretel. Mrs. Downs sets a purpose for reading by creating an AIM each day that the students need to accomplish. According to Mrs. Downs, she focuses on reading in the morning, because based on her assessment of the students during this time it is when they are engaged the most. In her 1999 essay, I Know Why the Caged Bird Cannot Read, Francine Prose examines what she believes is the detrimental relationship between novels written by writers of different ethnic groups and identities and high school students. By employing rhetorical devices such as ethos, rhetorical questions, and cause and effect, Prose can emphasize how new curriculums in high school English courses including novels by culturally diverse writers are causing students to show less interest in reading. Prose begins her essay with an anecdote where she relates herself to other parents of high school students by saying she finds herself each September “increasingly appalled by the dismal lists of texts that [her] sons are doomed to waste a school year reading.” Providing this anecdotal evidence…

For this assignment I had the opportunity to observe Renee Boucher's resource room class at Sunset High School in Beaverton. As a nine-year-old, I anticipated three days of the year: my birthday, Christmas, and the Scholastic Book Fair. Year after year, upon seeing the flimsy, cartoon-adorned catalog land on my desk displaying the date of the upcoming event, I did a mental (and, probably physical) happy dance. My mom’s checkbook could never keep up with my eager circling, highlighting, and squealing over every series, classic, and upcoming release. I remember 2007 especially well, that’s because of Andrew Clements.…

Francine Prose is a living author and critic who was born in the 1940’s and has produced multiple works which have been rewarded with grants and honors. Prose wants the reader ask themselves how aware English teachers are about their curriculum regarding literature. It is Prose’s belief that instead of choosing real challenging books, English teachers around the country are choosing books with simpler themes and characters, and preventing deep thought about their meanings, which is stunting the love of books for high school students. Prose believes that books are no longer read deliberately enough (98), she believes books are no longer being written or read by the word, but skimmed over. Teachers sometimes choose masterpieces to assign their children, but simply do not follow it up…

I have been going to my local homeschool co-op for a short time compared to everyone else. In my short few months that I have been going there helping out and learning, I have noticed some very big problems. A few of these problems are, preparedness of the students and teachers, the classes never end on time, sometimes the kids are too loud, and everything feels really rushed. Most of these problems stem from a lack of organization within the group and can easily be fixed.
