Mrs Bunkers Reflection

The students in Mrs. Bunkers 2nd period class were students that did great in school and were taking advanced level classes. The students were not being challenged in class and did not want to do some of the regular things that Mrs. Bunker had them doing like reading the textbook. Miller in, The book Whisperer said “I have learned that students hunger for more information, beyond what their social studies textbooks offers if we go the extra mile to provide it” (Miller, 2009, p. 79). Providing additional text and information could encourage a student to learn more about the subject outside of the classroom and encourage a love for learning. Many students want to know how the information connects to their lives or how the information connects to society today. Many textbooks do not go over this information but students seem to be more interested in something if they are able to make connections with what’s happening immediately.
Mrs. Bunker had the student create a play out of the information they learned from the textbook. This allowed the student to get creative and teach the other students about what they learned. The student were having a lot of fun

Mrs. Nagel used her own experience to relate to the child in a positive way. Her family owned a bakery when she was younger so she positively related to the student and encouraged all of the students to try Indian food at the student restaurant. “…an external power can force a change in self-perception” (Delpit, 2002, p. 194). This quote because it points out how powerful our words and reactions are to other people. As a teacher we must be careful with what we say to students and make sure that we check the biases we may have at the door because what we say or do can force a good or bad change in our students’

In My Freshman Year there are many points in which Rebecca digs deep into students reasoning for their activity many of which gives clarity on a professors confusion with student activity. The greater part of this confusion pertains to why college students seem so unmotivated during class. There was a main theme when taking on this question, which can simply be put that students are not prioritizing what is learned within the classroom but what is learned outside of the classroom. Through survey and interviews Nathan found that students could agree that about sixty-five percent of what they learned in college had nothing to do with what was learned in class and class-related activities. This begs the question- why even attend then?…

Teaching is an integral part of most species’ existence. It ranges from the primitive forms of teaching survival, to the most advanced teachings at universities. It has increasingly been challenged, questioned, and modified due to the many controversial views it has conjured up. The text, “On the Uses of a Liberal Education: As Lite Entertainment for Bored College Students”, by Mark Edmundson, is about how, in his opinion, society, educational institutions, and the students themselves, all prevent the students from being original, unique, and succeeding in class. The second text, “Lies My Teacher Told Me:…

Seventh grade, my second year now at what I thought to be the worst school in the world. On back to school night I met a man who would change my perspective on life completely, that man being Brandon Lilly. Henry Adams once said “A teacher affects eternity; he can never tell where his influence stops.” At a mere five-foot four he appeared to be a kid minus the burly lumberjack beard that he possessed. I remember being skeptical at first because I had never had a male teacher before.…

For thousands of years, books have entertained and educated the masses. To ban a book is downright unjust in the way it forbids a person to communicate their thoughts, as well as restricts people from enjoying a piece of literature. Books as a whole are excellent teachers, and show another face to the world, and should not be banned. Moreover, the banning of books infringes on the freedom of speech and the freedom to read.…

Walking into Kekionga Middle School I noticed a lot of differences from schools that I had visited previously. The most visible one being the school’s population and location. I had never observed at an urban school and have never felt such a cultural difference between me and the students. With a school population that was so diverse and not within the same background as I was, I immediately started thinking about my future teaching career and what I would do in that kind of atmosphere. I later on asked Mrs. Parker why she chose this school and said that it was because she went to Fort Wayne Community Schools all of her life, so she did not feel change at all.…

I stand before you today to discuss the overuse of standardized testing. Children of these upcoming generations have it engrained in their minds that it is imperative that they prepare themselves for a schooling system with multitudes of tests. Children in these schooling systems are required by law to take standardized tests to represent their currents school. While this is seems beneficial to be funding; parents are not able to perceive how the school and teachers are attempting to construct this into the children’s schedules. Teachers are not only piling on the word for the kids preparing for these tests, but are also forcing all of this knowledge that in a short period of time onto these students.…

Going into this week assignment I was having a hard time trying to decide on which topic I should select. After reading the poem “To my Dear and Loving Husband” by Anne Bradstreet, I decided to stick with the topic of love, and the love couples share. In the movie Lean on Me, Joe Clark persuades the staff and students that hard work is necessary in order to be successful through the use of pathos, logos and ethos. One of the successful ways that he persuades them is using pathos, he appeals to their emotion. First, he calls 100 students on to the stage and kicks them out because they were a threat to the other students. It might make students upset but it send a message that need to be made. This is effective method because he shows his new acquired power and this depicts anger in the students and confusion so they will pay attention and listen.…
