Magnetic resonance imaging, also known as an MRI scan, is a type of scan that uses magnetic fields and radio wave energy to create images of the organs and tissues, such as the brain. It is a scan that is used to detect things such as tumors, infections and injuries. It is often used after an x-ray or CT scan is done to gather more information. This paper will discuss MRI in depth such as how an MRI works, its use in society, the differences between MRI and other scans and the future for MRI. An MRI consists of a horizontal tube, known as the bore, that runs through the magnet which is capable of creating a large magnetic field. The strength of the magnet is measured …show more content…
One of the similarities that they have with each other is that all of these scans use some type of radiation. However, CT and PET scans use ionizing radiation while MRI scans do not. Another similarity that they have is that they all produce images of our organs. However, out of the three, an MRI gives the most detailed images of the organ. Another difference that they have with each other is that they use different things to produce an image of the organ or tissue. An MRI uses magnets and radio waves, a CT scan uses x-rays and a PET scan uses radioactive positrons to produce their images. Lastly, CT and MRI scans look at the structure of the organ or tissue while a PET scan looks at the function of the organ or tissue being examined. Although this increases the amount of space in the scanner, this causes a weaker magnetic field so it could miss some abnormalities in the tissues or organs. There is also a branch of MRI, known as functional MRI, that has been developed to create brain maps of the nerve cells. They have developed a silent MRI scanner since the typical MRI creates a large volume of sound. The noise is removed by using a type of 3D technology technique called Silenz. When it is used with the corresponding MRI gradient and radio frequency technology, it eliminates the sound usually caused by an MRI scan. Lastly, they are currently developing a smaller version of the MRI scan so they can examine just the tissue or organ being studied without examining the whole body.
