Mr Youngberg Classroom Observation

Mrs. Gray allowed for me to join Ms. Youngberg’s second period comprehensive live skills class to interact with different special education students to get a sense of all many types of special education students there are. Ms. Youngberg taught a class full of different students-both in seven and eight grade- that are working at their own pace and on different subjects such as math and reading. Ms. Youngberg also has several student aids in her classroom so her students have someone to interact with and to ask for help when needed. As I walk into the classroom the students become very shy and wonder who I am. Ms. Youngberg introduces me to her students allowing the students to feel not as shy making the classroom environment feel very relaxing and friendly. Alex is working on memorizing his numbers with an activity that involves colorful teddy bears and a white board. I am lessoned on what to do with the activity so I can help Alex, and so then I begin. I draw circles on the board and Alex counts them so he can go onto the next level. Once Alex says how many circles are drawn, he grabs the teddy bear toys and places them inside the circles, as he places them he counts each bear as it’s being placed as a way to learn how to count. The bears are placed inside the circles and the final step is for Alex to say the final number I was trying to make him acknowledge. We continue the ritual by counting numbers from one to ten. Alex forgets some numbers but with the help of the teddy bears, it allowed for him to get through. It’s very generous and smart of Ms. Youngberg to allow her students to use toys as a tool to learn! As a way of acknowledging their numbers, they were rewarded with gummy candy! Yes, it’s too early for candy, but candy seems to encourage the students to work very

Once teachers began to look past Sean’s disability and develop flexible teaching styles, they were able to create systems that aided the progressing minds of not only Sean, but his classmates as well. During end of the year meetings and interviews, Sean’s teachers explained how they were able to adapt instruction and class activities to work for all of their students. They were also able to communicate with Sean’s parents in calm and clear ways through both vocal and visual cues. My time at Best Buddies quickly became my favorite part of each week.
