To begin with, Mr. Frank showed love to his daughters while Mr. Van Daan was quite cold to Peter. One of the times when he showed that he was loving was when he gave both Margot and Anne a diary, so she could write down her thoughts and feelings. Mr. Frank as a leader showed selflessness, when Mr. Van Daan showed himself as very selfish. When the robber broke in Mr. Frank went down to check on it himself. He gave no thought to it and asked no one to come down with him. Mr. Van Daan however only worries about himself. He stole food in the middle of the night because he was hungry. He stated, “I’m hungry” (pg.504). Although everyone else is in need of food as well. They didn’t steal extras for themselves. In addition, Mr. Frank was organized and Mr. Van Daan was grumpy. Mr. Frank organized the whole Secret Annex. He planned all the details such as getting outside help, sleeping arrangements, and the people who would be staying there. Mr. Van Daan was negative and talked down to others. He made fun of Anne’s personality, he said, “Men don’t like that thing in a girl…” (pg.466). He thinks no man will ever like Anne because of her attitude.
In conclusion, even though Mr. Frank and Mr. Van Daan share closely related roles as fathers, husbands, and leaders, they are very different people. Mr. Frank’s endless love, high patience, calmness, selflessness, and organization contrast Mr. Van Daan’s always greedy, cold, selfish, grumpy ways. Mr. Frank definitely is a better person overall. Mr. Van Daan lacks some needed skills in all
