Mr Tsui Essay

Great comment Mr. Tsui! My interpretation reading the story is that since Torres knew that there was a chance the barber could murder, there is no way that Torres came in defenseless. Torres was ready to fight the barber, and to his surprise after many assassination attempts, the barber didn’t kill him. The barber had such a golden opportunity but didn’t take it, thus Torres figured that the barber wouldn’t take any opportunities to kill him. Since it was revealed in the end that Torres doesn’t enjoy ending lives, I interpreted the story that the barber will be left off as Torres wouldn’t want to kill someone who wouldn’t kill him. If the roles were reversed, I believe the same outcomes would have occurred where they both survive since it was …show more content…
Wars are so draining on everyone that citizens often forget the purpose of why there is a war. Wars have a devastating effect on people who had no hand in whatever conflict. It made me think about how it wasn’t discussed in the story that killing Captain Torres may seem to be a good thing for the rebels, but it could leave devastating effects to those closest to Torres. In a way, killing and wars are selfish as the perpetrator doesn’t consider the bigger scheme of who is affected. As for the role leaders have with exemplifying negative characteristics, it’s extremely important. Many people have a mob mentality and mindlessly follow the leader for many reasons, fear, love and belonging. Can you even begin to imagine how history could be different without such leaders? If Hitler never lead the holocaust, then a movement of anti semitism would have never been eradicated across Germany. It’s mind boggling how much one person can effect a group of people. If the barber killed Torres, then that may have inspired the rebels to become violent and adopt extremist views that killing is okay if it’s an enemy. The ending question is excellent, and there isn’t a single answer as every leader is an individual thus they’re all different. I’m sure there are a lot of factors, how much do I want to win this war? Is it worth dying? To close off, this has been a great discussion Mr.

Genghis Khan and the Making of the Modern World by Jack Weatherford is a well-written account of the steppe nomad Temüjin on his journey to unify the Mongolian Steppe Nomads. In the process Temüjin, known formally as Genghis Khan, and his successors conquered much of the eastern world in a series of campaigns spanning several centuries. These campaigns left their mark, both good and bad, on the conquered lands and can be seen today in the cultures and ideas of the modern world. Weatherford’s text draws from the Prior to reading the book, I had little knowledge of Genghis Khan. I surmised that he belonged to a dynasty of sorts, inherited his position, and that was historically the greatest of many Mongol leaders.…

With injustice and cruelty running rampant in the world, it is unsurprising that people become determined to make things better for tomorrow. Those aware of the moral greyness of their actions often quote the cliché saying that the ends justify the means. Commendable yet unreasonable, leaders whose sole purpose in life is to fix what they see as “wrong” with the world fall prey to thinking there is only ally or enemy. In the long run, they cause more conflict since they no longer force themselves to hold their principles to same standards as they hold others. This is the downfall of leaders in many works of literature, including Harrison Bergeron and The Lord of the Flies.…

With leadership comes the responsibility to set an example for followers, provide direction for the masses, and work with fellow leaders improve current situations. However, with the task of leadership also comes the unfortunate matter involving the misuse of power. Torres closed his eyes with a tiring look on his face and sat in the chair waiting for Barber to apply the lather on him. Barber has a flashback of when Captain Torres ordered the town to come to the school patio to see some of the rebel that were captured were hung, which made him even angrier because he was so close to his face and he wanted to do something so badly. He realized he was about to have his hands on his face so he would have an upper hand once he starts using the razor blade on his face. Barber begins to put the lather on his face and Captain Torres continues to poke fun at him by saying “it would be so easy for me to go straight to sleep,” almost knowing for sure that Barber wouldn 't have the audacity to try anything that could get him in trouble or even killed in his own barbershop. John Stuart Mill, a British philosopher and political economist from the 1800’s once wrote, “War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things: the decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks that nothing is worth a war, is much worse.” (Mill, 1868) Mill goes on to explain the difference between a war that degrades men, and one that honors them. A degrading war is one in which generals use the men like instruments to implement their own desires. An honoring war is one where men fight to “protect other human beings against tyrannical injustice.”…

A leader will not always be the strongest person, someone will always have a higher APFT score. These things don’t make them bad leaders, these things make them human. A leader is there to guide their soldiers.…

In a way yes, the revolutionaries would win but only for a matter of time. The government would get another captain soon after and the barber would be executed before long. This proves that he chose the right path in that everyone else’s life would’ve continued on basically the same either way, except he would much rather keep his own life the same. The barber wanted to keep a clean conscience. As stated at the end of the story, Captain Torres knows when he walks into the barber shop that he is about to face his foe and also that his foe knows about him, yet he still takes a chance and walks in…

The definitive diagnosis is through an acid fast stain of the bacteria in a lab, obtained through multiple sputum cultures and a chest x-ray showing abnormalities of the lungs. There is antibiotic treatment for tuberculosis but the bacteria is very drug resistant due to the stiff structure of the cell wall and as a result, the antibiotic course is long and sometimes dangerous due to serious side effects. The most common antibiotics used to treat TB are isoniazid and rifampicin for a minimum of six months. There are drug-resistant strains of TB known as MDR-TB and in these cases, several drugs are used at once to give treatment a better chance at success. Those who have latent TB are treated right away with one antibiotic to prevent the disease from becoming active at some point in time.…
