Every year there is always a film that has high expectations and fails to live up to the hype. However, this review is not over one of those depressing movies. This particular film was not supposed to make it this big. Many, when they heard of the corrupts of this movie, believed that is was dumb, made no sense and should not of been produced. This movie is known as Mr. Smith Goes to Washington. When reading the title one can understand what the critics were saying. What kind of film writer would give a movie a title like this? Smith Goes to Washington is probably a movie a lot of people never heard of. That is understandable because the movie did come out in 1939, a whole seventy-five years ago. So the proper thing to do is first give a short summary of the movie. Here is one from the IMBD website. “Naive and idealistic Jefferson Smith, leader of the Boy Rangers, is appointed on a lark by the spineless governor of his state. He is reunited with the state's senior senator--presidential hopeful and childhood hero, Senator Joseph Paine. In Washington, however, Smith discovers many of the shortcomings of the political process as his earnest goal of a national boys' camp leads to a conflict with the state political boss, Jim Taylor. Taylor first tries to corrupt Smith and then later attempts to destroy Smith through a scandal.” Although this does not sound like nothing specular, Sidney Buchman did a terrific job writing this script. He took an unpublished story, "The Gentleman from Montana" by Lewis R. Foster, and turned it into something of his own.
