Mr. Proctor In Arthur Miller's Analysis

When Mr. Proctor creates conflict with Mr. Putnam’s plan to look for witchcraft, Putnam diverts the attention by stating “I do not think I saw you at Sabbath meeting since snow flew” (Miller 28). Mr. Putnam demonstrates red herring because he incorporates information that does not correlate with the current argument. By bringing religion into the conflict, Putnam distracts the individuals around him and sets Proctor as an unreligious man, making him less trustworthy. This allows Putnam to prevent Proctor to make him seem as a fool for believing in witchcraft.
