The atheistic Post-Modernism views established in the 1960's are still influencing our culture today. Post-Modernism is a literature movement that developed in the mid 20th century that is characterized by distrust or rejection of government officials, skepticism, and atheistic beliefs. The story, "Mr. Palomar on the Beach: Reading a Wave" by Italo Calvino embodies all that Post-Modernism is about. The story focuses on Mr. Palomar as an individual, and expresses the belief that there is no truth in the world. The pessimistic views expressed in Post-Modernism literature about God, religion, education, and truth have influenced today's culture. Hi, this is Charlotte, and here is my podcast on my understanding of the stylistic traits of Post-Modernism. For evidence I've chosen the short stories "Song" by Annabelle Lyon and "19 Knives" by Mark Anthony Jarman, along with the podcast "Everything is a Remix", done by Kirby Ferguson. So boiled down, I feel Post-Modernism pushes you to question your trust, both in the narrator and society. First of all, the writers tend to pick a storyline which does not revolve around order, nor come to a "happy ending". Also, the characters, or ideas, in Post-Modernist writing are often helpless, hard to like and/or go deprived of meaning.…

Journal #1 Literary works are frequently observed by an abundance of individuals throughout a typical day, especially on a college campus. These books are generally catalysts for future coursework and are oftentimes viewed nonchalantly by their owners and dismissed as insignificant. These attitudes, commonly in line with those of the pragmatists', presume that literature has no “sufficient value” (Gillespie 16). Gillespie's article, “Why Literature Matters”, strives to disprove such allegations, stating that literature is, in fact, consequential. By referencing many illustrious individuals and literary masterpieces, Gillespie maintains that by examining and scrutinizing quality literature it allows its audience “the opportunity to try out other lives and connect with other humans through exercise of imagination and empathy” (Gillespie 21).…

Truth in Fictional Literature One of the themes in Miguel de Cervantes’s Don Quixote is the opposition of truth and imaginary in literature. Various characters within the novel, including the priest, state that literature’s purpose should be to only illuminate the truth and even suggest censorship on books that could rot one’s mind, like Don Quixote’s mind. However, one of the aspects of fictional literature that the priest and others do not understand is that fictional literature does contain truth that is to say to expose aspects of human nature and to provoke catharsis—to cleanse the mind’s palate. This is evident throughout various works throughout history.…

Modernism Paper (Draft) Modernism has the ability to completely change how a story is told. Certain modernist ideas impact different elements of a story. An example of this would be the modernist idea of the world as a wasteland and how it affects the setting, characters, and events of a story. “The Grapes of Wrath” by John Steinbeck is a great example of a story that expresses the idea of the world as a wasteland.…

With every step the sand shifts. With every unexpected motion forward there is some backward and down, just like walking in fresh fallen snow. Yet unlike the crystalline blanket of white bequeathed by the winter time, the fine grains under foot give me warmth from the suns rays.
