During my junior year at Stephen Decatur High School, I was enrolled in American Literature with Mrs. Moore. At first I thought she was a hard teacher because she made us write a lot. I enjoyed writing creative pieces, but in her class she gave us a prompt or we had to analyze a text and prove how the author believed in the American Dream or not. The first essay we wrote I scored a 29 out of 30 and was proud of myself because English has not always been my strongest subject. Our next assignment was on The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald.…

It is 1964 in Birmingham, Alabama and a local hack driver named Okonkwo was driving past the remnants of the 16th Street Baptist Church that had been destroyed a little over a year ago. It was the spring so the unvarying precipitation prolonged the process of rebuilding; even if they rebuilt the church there will always be a hole in the community. Okonkwo was a huge man with bushy eyebrows and large nose. Okonkwo was working nearby and was present for all of the commotion and could not believe his eyes. Once he found out that the Ku Klux Klan was behind the bombing he swore to himself that he would devote his life to apprehend the guilty and punish the evil.…

An incident that impacted me significantly occurred when I was in the fifth grade. I was always a high achiever and an “A” student. This being the case, they have inspired my decision to be a teacher, preferably an elementary school teacher. Last year, I sat in on my aunt’s third grade class at Washington Irving, an elementary school in my district that I attended for three years.
