The biggest dilemma that the protagonist has to face appears towards the beginning of the story. William Hodges was living an average life in retirement until the day a letter came. The letter, which was addressed directly to him, came directly from Mr. Mercedes, the killer who was still on the loose after a year; the letter provided new information on the murderer and also brought problems to Hodges. After close inspection, Hodges came to the conclusion that the letter was authentic and that he’d have to make a decision in that moment. He could either keep the letter to himself for his own investigation, or he could hand it over to the police for further inspection. Both these options had their consequences and their upsides. If Hodges kept the letter with certainty that he could crack the case, then he could accused of withholding evidence. If he handed over the letter to law enforcement in hopes that they could have a chance to catch the killer, then there could also be a possibility that the infamous killer could get away. The outcomes of his decision could save or end lives, and it wasn’t like Hodges could stand there and just ignore it all. Hodges chose to disobey the law; he kept the letter and decided that he would be the one to catch the murderer. Throughout the course of the story, we get to meet a character named Jerome Robinson, a kind and intelligent boy who helps the protagonist on his journey. Jerome is exceptionally kind and caring towards the people who he meets. He loves his family and is really hard working; he does all kinds of chores for Hodges and also happens to be his only friend. He has a very sweet dog which he treats very well, which further shows how well-intentioned he truly is. During Hodges times of need, Jerome was there to help him out whether it was a computer problem or just a simple chat that Bill (Hodges) needed. What really caught my attention to Jerome as well was that he’s also a very good friend; when Bill felt down, Jerome would do a little comedy skit containing his alter-ego, Tyrone.
