Improved Essays
Mr. Marty Thompson has worked in the funeral home business since the year 1987. Which means Mr. Thompson has been in the funeral home business for thirty years. He is the director at the West Resthaven Funeral Home.

Mr. Marty Thompson developed his interests in the funeral home business when he was young. It started off for him by cutting grass at a cemetery in Ohio. After, events in his life just caused him to continue down that career path.

They saw many changes in the funeral industry in the last five to ten years. One such change is that they started making jewelry with the deceased's fingerprints on them. Another such change was that they started serving catering for the funerals. Even ashes are being turned into diamonds. However,

The least expensive burial is $4,030 dollars. However, the cost doesn’t include the casket for both cremation and burial. I don’t think most poor people can afford the least expensive option because the cost is over two thousand dollars. Most poor people barely have enough money for rent and groceries. I doubt that they can even remotely afford either burial or cremation. The trend of purchasing caskets online is increasing. It cannot save people money if they buy caskets online from other companies. The price from other companies costs a bit more than the funeral homes cheapest price for a casket. The simplest form of a green burial is an all-natural casket made of wood without any metal. It doesn’t require bombing. Another form of a green burial is the tree casket. Basically, the body is cremated and placed inside an urn with a seed (“Biodegradable Urn with Seed”). That seed can then grow into a tree with the ashes as a nutrient. There are many different types of seed options to choose from (Memorial Tree Urns). Apparently, green burials cannot be done at regular cemeteries (Marsden). They must be done with only nature’s sources (Marsden). Which means embalming is not allowed (Marsden). So basically, if someone chooses a green burial, they can’t be buried with metal or even have a cement headstone. However, people can still choose a green burial casket or urn option at a regular cemetery. Mr. Thompson said they can …show more content…
I have a fear of being placed in the ground. So, I would prefer to be cremated. I also would like to be placed in a bio urn. That way a tree or flower can grow from my ashes. I like pop music but I don’t I would want that playing at my funeral. So, perhaps piano music would play at my funeral. I like roses and other flowers. But, I would prefer red and white roses. Just like my great aunt's funeral memorial service. I certainly don't want an open casket. I would like a family and friends special service. I would like my ashes to be placed in the bio-seed urn in front of family and friends while music plays. Then have the seed urn planted with the family and friends witnessing. I would like the tree to be a cherry blossom tree. After the planting service, I would like there to be a catering meal for friends and family. For example, a banquet with food like my favorite Boston Market Chicken Pot Pie, green beans, and mac n cheese while music plays in the background. I am a Christian. So, I would like a Christian pastor and prayer service. I would prefer that the banquet and planting memorial service is on the same day. I would like flowers at the planting service. The place I would like to have my pot planted is in the backyard of my family’s home. That way my family can gaze on the cherry blossom tree often. I would like a bench placed at the foot of the cherry blossom tree and a fountain nearby. I don’t care for plaques. But, I would like

The body is washed and then well decorated for the placing in the casket. With many different requirements on how the casket is supposed to be, Mitford expresses that the requirements could be a little overwhelming. Such as, the body is supposed to be placed as high as it can be, but at same time at a level where the nose is not impacted with the closing of the lid. Finally, she ends her essay explaining that the religious service makes it an open casket viewing by themselves without asking. According to her, 90 percent of American funerals are open casket, which surprises a lot of…

Schmitt uses the flowers as an example of the difference between the cultures. While in Western society people give brightly colored bouquets and wreaths to the family of the deceased and even put single red roses on the coffin of the lost one, in China the floral arrangements are made in, “White, the color associated with death in China” (quoted in Faigley…

The most effective narrative in my opinion is “The Embalming of Mr. Jones” by Jessica Mitford. In the essay Mitford talks about the malpractices committed by funeral homes. She talks about the exact way a body is embalmed and then placed for display. Although embalming has been practiced for ages, she emphasizes the disgust at modern techniques to the process. Mitford explains, “About three to six gallons of a dyed and perfumed solution formaldehyde, glycerin… is soon circulating through Mr. Jones whose mouth has been sewed together with a “needle directed upward between the upper lip and gum and brought out through the left nostril,””…

The role and responsibilities of a funeral director has evolved over the years from someone who prepared the deceased for burial to the modern funeral directors of today, who perform many other duties to help the family through their difficult time of loss. Funeral and memorial service duties that were once handled by friends, family or clergy quite often become the director's responsibility. A funeral director oversees every detail in the planning and preparation of a funeral. They will make sure the body is transported to the funeral home along with the necessary death certificates and paperwork.…

Dr. Shipman had one of the best guises a serial killer could expect to have. He was a family doctor, a pillar of society, respected by his colleagues and patients (England, 2015). This, on its face value made it inconceivable that he could be responsible for murdering so many people. When suspicions first arose that something criminal may be afoot with the unusually high number of deaths occurring out of Dr. Shipman’s practice, things were overlooked that could have allowed the police to end this case sooner.…

Every religion has a different viewpoint on the afterlife. While there may be some similarities, the differences are vast. Specifically, Hinduism and Buddhism differ in the way they approach the idea of the afterlife. That is the main difference; how they interpret death. However, a common theme across these religions is that a life well lived on earth today brings an eternal reward tomorrow.…

When I was only ten years old, I told my mother I wanted to be a funeral director and/or embalmer when I got older. Thirteen years later, I am still saying that same phrase, but only this time it is hitting a little closer to home. I have been waiting 4,745 days to finally be able to say that I am only one year away from achieving that long term goal of mine and I could not be more excited. Although I knew exactly what I wanted to do at such young age, I did not apply to mortuary science school straight out of high school like I could have. After I received my academic honors diploma from high school, I attended Saint Mary’s College, Notre Dame.…

Drew Gilpin Faust’s This Republic of Suffering: Death and The American Civil War is an ambitious and thought provoking read. Faust tackles a subject that has not been widely written about: the “death ways” of the American Civil War generation.2 Faust divides her study of the newly transformed ars moriendi into nine areas in the chapters that follow her preface entitled the Work of Death. It is very nice to see that you have two options. I did not think about that, I would like to be cremated because I think about the environment, and bury bodies is not a good way to help our environment. Another reason that I prefer to be cremated is about the cost for a funeral / burial. It is a very expensive price, and I do not think that it is fair to leave this debt for my family.…

I think it is a very creative and environmentally safe idea. In fact, when I die I would love to embalmed using natural substances and essential oils, have a funeral where people do not mourn my loss but celebrate my life with upbeat songs, preaching, and clapping, and then be turned into a tree and planted next to my fiancé and my grandparents, so that I could continue to give to others even when I am dead and gone. The reason for this is because when I was little my grandma used to read me stories and my favorite and still my favorite was “The Giving Tree” (it also reminded me a lot of how my grandma was exactly like the tree giving till she had nothing left), and I always use to say I want be like that tree (not talking about death in that time but being that kind of person) grandma and I think that if I could get buried like this then I could be like that…
