In the first section of this book we meet the character Mr. March who is fighting with the Union. Recently he and the rest of his men had had a bloody encounter with confederate troops. March decides that he wants to write a letter to his wife but decided that she didn't know all of whats going on. So he wrote her a letter that made everything seem good. He reflects on how one of his friends saved his life as the letter comes to a close. He then goes down to the field hospital and realizes that he had been there before. The field hospital was an old house he had encountered many years ago when he was selling things. He remembers the people in the house and how he lived there for years. Symbolism
The house in this story represented the past for Mr. March. We know this because as soon as he saw it he flashed back to when he was young and happy. The house also has a certain attachment to happiness for Mr. March because there he was accepted by people that didn't even know him.
Second Section
In the second section, the books starts out with Mr. March remembering the past when he used to go to parties. He is specially remembering the night that him and Marmee had conceived there first child and been married. March soon gets to his new place and is put on a farm to teach the children. The farm is ruined by the raids and other serious problems. One kid stole a pig to feed his family and was trapped in a well by his master. Then we get another flashback of how March lost all of his money. He made lots of money from stocks and selling random goods to people but made a bad choice and gave it to a man who was supposed to start a black community. This man spent all of the money on other things and March was never paid back. Then, march, who is out of money at this time is offered by his aunt to take one of the kids. This makes his wife furious and he has to stop her from making irrational decisions towards her. Then we go back to the present where he is teaching kids how to read and write in school at this torturous farm. He then takes care of a little black boy named Jimse who burnt himself. His mother
