Holland's Opus, Richard Dreyfuss portrayed Mr. Holland well. In any movie, if the actors do a sloppy job it makes the movie bad and it loses the audience. When an actor does a good job of playing the character, it makes the movie interesting and exciting to watch. Richard Dreyfuss plays Mr. Holland in a way that makes the audience care about him. Mr. Holland changes vastly during the time of the movie and Dreyfuss must change with the character. This means that he must still show the same personality traits as he got older, but then he had to portray him as getting wiser throughout the movie. That is difficult to do because Dreyfuss is playing the same character the whole time, but the character changes so much during the movie that he is almost a completely different person by the end. He does superb job changing with Mr. Holland, for you can see and feel the growth of Mr. Holland throughout the movie. He also shows Mr. Holland’s personality by being funny and serious at the same time, and how he reacts to the conflicts he faces. He was funny and serious at the same time because he could make a joke then just have a straight face showing that he is taking the situation seriously. His personality does change during the movie but not the main parts of it. During the movie, Mr. Holland becomes more caring. When characters grow throughout the movie the audience can see how the characters changed and their accomplishments they made throughout life. Mr. Holland has tremendous growth throughout the movie. He starts out hating teaching and being a horrible teacher but by the end of the movie he loves teaching and is good at it. Then, he also grows as a dad and is an extraordinary dad by the end of the movie. Mr. Holland’s growth is basically the plot of the movie. The director uses the growth of Mr. Holland to show how troubled his life is and how much he does not know about life. Mr. Holland’s character evolution helps to show how he found the meaning of life and how to make his life great. This character growth makes this movie exactly right for the profound people who want Mr. Holland to succeed. The actors and the director show the characters’ growth well and by the end of the movie you can easily see how most of the characters have changed or grown in some way. Without the character’s growth, no movie would exist because the movie goes through Mr. Holland’s life and shows how he makes it in the world. The audience can learn the lesson that life does not always go as planned, but you can still make your life wonderful.
