Mr. Gillanders: My Hero

Improved Essays
A veteran is not a superhero in a comic book or someone who wears a cape. A veteran is someone who stands up for America, day after day. My grandfather, Robert Gillanders, served in the Connecticut Air National Guard for forty years. Mr. Gillanders grew up in Hartford, Connecticut and currently lives in Wethersfield, Connecticut. I chose this person because he has never given up in any situation and is my hero. Entering the military was not the easiest thing to do. Although it was mandatory to enter for two years, Robert made the decision to stay in for forty years. This is what led Mr. Gillanders to join the Air Force at age eighteen during January of 1964. He volunteered throughout his time spent in the National Guard and was never drafted. Mr. Gillanders’s parents always approved of his decision to join the military. …show more content…
My grandfather , a “boot camp survivor” exclaimed that boot camp was the toughest thing to complete during the military. But, fortunately, boot camp pushed Mr. Gillanders to strive to a better ranking in the National Guard. Before the time he left the military, Mr. Gillanders earned the rank of Command Chief Master Sergeant, the ninth highest non-commissioned officer rank. Although he worked is all forces of the military, being Command Chief Master Sergeant was his favorite. Before earning this rank, my grandfather was in charge of the food facility. “The food was always alright,” he

Why are Veterans America's heroes. Veterans do so much for us and our nation, risking their lives and leaving their families so we can keep ours. There are approximately 22 million veterans living in the U.S. today, that is around 7.3% of all living Americans today. Veterans also make up 12% of the homeless adults, which is very sad because they fought so hard in the war for this country and we repay them with no homes, food, or water. In the war there are many things you risk.…

A veteran to me is a patriotic, unselfish, brave, and courageous person, who would sacrifice time from their families to serve and protect our nation. As Jeff Miller once said, “The willingness of America’s Veterans to sacrifice for our country has earned them our lasting gratitude.” Veterans from every country have served throughout many wars. They have put their blood, sweat, and effort into doing the right and beneficial thing for their nation. Being a veteran means not only to serve in the military, but it means to have the selflessness and courage to go off to war to ensure the freedom of the nation.…

Patriot Pen American writer Joseph Campbell once said, “A hero is someone who has given his or her life to something bigger than oneself.” The writer’s words taught me what it means to be a patriot. I have a handful of relatives who currently serve in the military, and even some that have passed due to war related incidents. It’s nearly impossible to find someone without a tear in their eye when a flag is given to the widow of a fallen soldier. That’s when you stop and realize that, that person was not only a soldier, but a husband, a father, a friend.…

After fighting for years to be promoted to the position of tank company executive officer, I believed that transitioning into the role would be relatively easy. I could not have been more mistaken. As soon as the paperwork settled and I donned my new uniform, I encountered an ethical dilemma that cast all of my previous training into doubt. The officer I replaced had been less than forthcoming in his maintenance reports to the company and battalion commanders. The officer had fabricated data on the number of maintenance problems in order to look better in the eyes of his superiors.…
