In chapter 1, "On Leadershp", Mr. Gardener outlines a foundation of leadership by indicating, followership is achieved when the flow of influence and communication goes in both directions. He also states that positional authority dose automatically mean that subordinates will be followers. It's up to the leader to earn the status of "performance elites" and the subordinates will determine if they will be followers, or continue as subordinates. Ultimately it will be the followers who will determine who the great leader are.
