Mr Fish Life Poem

My story of someone who went against the grain and got unjust punishment for it, is of my English teacher in high school. He was fired for using the word “fuck” in a poem that was part of an AP English course at our public high school. The poem was part of an English assignment that the students did weekly. It was called poetry roundtable. Every student, and the teacher, would write an anonymous poem. Then, everyone would read the poems and try to guess which poem was written by which person. It was a good exercise because you could see what others thought of you, and how you thought of others. For example, if someone wrote a poem about smoking you would probably guess it was the skater kid in class; however, it could very well be the sweet …show more content…
Mr. Fish wanted the poems to be as true to yourself as possible. Mr. Fish was always going above and beyond to make the class more exciting for the students. Thus, this event was hosted at local diners, that were off campus, during school hours. On one of the days they left the school to go eat and read poems, one of the students was offended that a teacher would use the word “fuck” in a poem that he knows students will read. This student was arrogant to the fact that the very objective was to try to fool you into thinking it was written by someone else. I didn’t help Mr. Fish’s cause that the student was extremely Christian, and had powerful parents. Mr. Fish was fired after the student took a picture of the poem and brought it to her mom. Her mother brought it to the school board and told them she was going to take legal action if he was not removed. Sit-ins were hosted at my school in Mr. Fish’s old classroom, protesting the decision. Meetings were held on how to protest. Cars were painted with markers with quotes of Mr. Fish, as well as little fish drawings. An online petition was started by myself and one other student that ended up getting 10,000 signatures. These signature included students of Mr. Fish that were in their twenties, and it was signed by exchange students from around the world that had him. I went on the radio with 5 other students and talked about how large of an impact he had on Easley. He was

Wednesday, September 16th, 2015 I did my observation of Paul Dunbar Middle School. Some of the first things I noticed when I entered the school was how enormous the school’s population is and how the school was mostly Hispanic and African American students. I arrived at the front desk and was asked by the assistant principal what was my preference of classroom. She then proceeded to take me the section of the school where the ESE classes are held. ESE stands for exceptional student education classes.…

Although there is a clearly stated disciplinary consequence for her action, the administrative staff conflict with enforcing that punishment. Mr. Furtoski, the principal, especially struggled with the decision because he did not want to supersede the teacher’s autonomy and rights to follow district mandated rules; which he helped to approve. At the same time, his moral consciousness played a role. He thought the punishment was unwarranted. In addition, Mr. Furtoski was concerned about jeopardizing Sheila’s honorable achievements and the renewed sense of pride it will bring to the school and community.…

We pride ourselves in being the country that offers a fair go for all, the country that was built upon egalitarianism, opportunity and the hope of a better life, the country of mateship where multiculturalism and diversity is embraced. These values act as the cornerstones of the Australian identity as we know it, and placed Australia on the map for the rest of the world to see. However the mantra of acceptance does not hold true for all. Whether born in Australia with foreign heritage or recently migrated, some members of society still struggle to feel fully integrated within our community. Robbed of their own identity and the chance to contribute to Australia’s.…

Wallace uses figurative language such as metaphors and personification, personal experiences, anecdotes and hypothetical situations/circumstances to further enhance his purpose of attempting to aid these graduates in breaking away from their idea and perspective of how they feel life might turn out for them. His intended audience is clearly the Kenyon graduate however, this speech also addresses all other college graduates who think they have it easy. Wallace begins the speech with a narrative of these “...two young fish swimming and they happen to meet an older fish swimming the other way, who nods at them and says “Morning, boys. How’s the water?””(Wallace 1). As the two young fish continue on swimming, one of them asks the other, “What the hell is water?”(Wallace 1).…

While reading “ Your Catfish Friend” by Richard Brautigan I was confused as to the meaning of the poem but after reading it a few times it became clearer. The overarching theme of the poem is a feeling of being unattractive and wanting to belong. From the very beginning of the poem one gets the sense that the author believes he is in accordance with a catfish a fish that: is a bottom feeder, lives in mud, and is known for being unpleasant. Brautigan juxtaposes his negative feeling of self worth with beautiful scenery where the catfish lives.…

Chris Crutcher argues in his article, “How They Do It”, that school systems should not become easily persuaded by the parents’ complaints to censor books that should be a part of the curriculum that their children benefit from due to the fact that the students can relate, learn, and build off of the books that are censored. Crutcher builds his argument throughout his article by including the use of personal anecdotes, pathos, and repetition. Due to the fact that Crutcher includes the use of personal anecdotes, he supports his argument. He builds his argument with the use of personal stories in hope to engage the readers.…

It took me a while to read this book. Every 15 pages or so, I would have to stop because I was so disgusted at what I read. Or shocked for lack of better word choice. It took time to digest; and sometimes I found myself looking up an event the author referenced because I had no clue what he was talking about especially being that this isn’t my history. Reading the stories of those people who were denied an education for five years was heartbreaking, not that education is cheap or anything…
