A large aspect of an individual is their identity. An identity is made up of many different characteristics, ranging from personality traits to an individual’s background. No matter what the trait is, it impacts an individual’s identity severely. Identity varies from person to person, so no one identity is ever the same. For Mr. Jaime Escalante, a high school teacher in the movie Stand and Deliver directed by Ramon Menendez, his identity is shaped by nonconformity and his universe of obligation, as well as how others see him. Mr. Escalante’s ability to nonconform is a large aspect of his identity. Most teachers at Garfield High School were uneducated in the subject being taught or just didn’t try to teach the students. He went against the normal school classes, and even though “There [were] some teachers [there] that couldn’t pass the AP calculus exam”, Mr. Escalante begged to teach the the students calculus. Not one of the teachers at the high school even knew calculus, but Mr. Escalante knew it would help his students, …show more content…
Escalante has powerful identity traits, the way others see him is vastly different. Most of his students disrespect him as a teacher. One student doesn’t take a quiz that Mr. Escalante handed out, telling him “I’m not taking the quiz”. She decided not to follow orders from her teacher simply because she did not like his style of teaching. This didn’t affect Mr. Escalante, however, his identity allowed him to punish the student until she took the quiz. Another student went so far as to respond to a question from Mr. Escalante with “I know one’s...two’s...and three’s”, and give Mr. Escalante the finger. He completely disrespected Mr. Escalante, even though he was just trying to teach the student some math. Mr. Escalante’s identity, however, contradicted the poor attitude of the student and he fought back with a witty comment. In the article “The Little High School That Could: Teacher Urges Latinos into College-- and is Not Rehired.” Beverly Beyette discusses the controversy ; that surrounded George Shirley at Alisal High in Salinas, California. Shirley was an English and History teacher at Alisal High in 1986, and he is well remembered as the teacher who pushed Latino students into some of the most prestigious universities in the country including some Ivy League universities. This story swept the whole country by storm because Shirley did the unthinkable and got 72 of 84 students into great schools but was later terminated from his position at Alisal High and was not rehired, and this caused many problems because some believed Shirley was an unfit teacher for writing some of his student’s college essays others will argue and say he was a great teacher. I agree with those ; hence, who think Shirley was a great teacher because he actually did something for his student…

Likewise, when students discovered which teachers prefered which type of students they changed to fit into that teachers perfect student. Pope states, “The students may use the disguises to hide their weakness or to show off their strengths, but in either case, the teacher is privy to only a partial view, often resulting in a lack of useful knowledge about the students, or worse, misconstructions about the youth.” An example of this claim is Teresa, one of the students Pope studied, she excelled in her business classes, and when she was nominated for Outstanding Business Award, her Spanish teacher was perplexed. He said that she often failed tests and didn’t turn in assignments.…

Students see teachers as authority figures in and outside of the classroom. At a young age, students expect and assume that everything taught in the classroom is a fact. This is the case for Tommy and his classmates who have so far been raised with a narrow mindset and are not used to learning about things that don’t have a definitive answer. An example of this mindset is when Miss Ferenczi allowed for six times eleven to equal sixty-eight. The students would not accept any other reasoning other than six times eleven equaling sixty-six.…

In his essay “The Joy of Reading and Writing: Superman and Me” author Sherman Alexie writes about the pleasures of reading. His thesis “My father loved books, and since I love my father with an aching devotion, I decided to love books as well” best describes the author’s position on the topic. He conveys his thesis to the readers through rhetorical devices such as ethos, pathos and logos and literary devices such as repetition as he describes his personal experiences. Sherman Alexie wrote "The Joy of Reading and Writing: Superman and Me" with the purpose of informing his readers of the challenges he faced as a young Native American boy who, by society’s standards, was not supposed to be educated. His love of books came from his love and adulation of his father.…

For example, he tells Angel that he does not want him in his class no more (Menéndez, 1998). Angel was late to the class because he took his grandmother to the doctor (Menéndez, 1998). Mr. Escalante realized later that he was wrong (Menéndez, 1998).…

Escalante uses his charisma to teach students in a performing arts type style. He dressed up as a chief one day and started cutting apples, and on other days he would use different accents to draw their attention and these methods worked. He managed to gain the respect of the students who in return were willing to fully devote themselves and their free time into learning the difficult material. After much studying, the students take the advanced placement calculus test and pass with above average scores, but questions arose as to whether or not the teens had cheated on the exam since they all seemed to have similarly mistaken answers.
