Mr. Dooley The Cat Ashwood Analysis

Dear reader, today I wish to share an incredibly eclectic, spiralling, black tale… a tail that belongs to Mr. Dooland “Dooley the Cat” Ashwood. There is more to his wacky unusual name than meets his jewelled emerald eyes. It is an Irish name, composed of the Gaelic dubh “black” and laoch “champion”, meaning Dooley loosely translates into “Black Champion”. Honestly, the name doesn’t quite fit him perfectly. “Dubh” describes his permanent obsidian coloured fur tuxedo and perhaps his dark sense of humour, like when he decides to scratch and destroy door frames in the house to get my attention. His mind is as razor-sharp as his claws (most of the time). “Laoch” is Gaelic for “champion”, meaning a person (well, feline in this case) who has surpassed all rivals. Dooley hasn’t quite surpassed the reigning queen of the house Marney, our infusion of earl grey tabby calm cunning cleverness and marmalade ginger pouncing playful purr-fection. She regularly reminds him of that! However, “laoch” also means “hero” …and that’s what Dooley is to me.

Dogs always try to please you, always there at the door, always obedient to the point of stupidity; they always come to you. When cats, the epitome of animalistic sophistication and intelligence, come to you (or in Dooley’s case, drool on you), I know they’ve made effort to show that they love me. Unfortunately in Dooley’s case, this showing of respectful love hasn’t always been
