In today's talk I shall analyse a segment of 40 lines from An Inspector Calls. These lines appear from Mrs Birling's quote (pg. 200) “I'm sorry she come to such a horrible end” right through to the end of act two (pg. 201). An Inspector Calls is set in the dining room of the Birling’s’ household in Brumley, an industrial city in the North Midlands. It is written in 1946 but An inspector Calls is based in 1912. Leading up to this passage Inspector Goole had questioned Mrs Birling with her involvement with the girl. Mrs Birling was part of a charity committee which Eva Smith attended for help as a pregnant women. Mrs Birling, stamping her authority, denied Eva smith any support for the organisation. She believed that the real person to blame for this situation was not Mrs Birling but it was indeed the father of this unborn baby. …show more content…
It involved Mrs Birling, the inspector, Shelia and Mr Birling. Gerald has left and Eric has gone for a walk. Since Eric has gone for a walk he is unable to provide any input or opinion on his actions with Eva Smith. This closes out act two which really changes the pace of the play, it creates vast interest for what will unfold in the next act. There is a close discussion between Inspector Goole and Mrs Birling about the punishment for whoever is responsible for Eva Smiths suicide. This point in the play if very significant as they decided that the person who is Eva Smith’s father is the person responsible for her death. This point in the play shows great dramatic irony, us the audience knows that the father is Eric, however Mrs Birling fails to realise. This creates great suspense among the reader as Mrs Birling is essentially deciding her son’s
