Mr Athens Nursing Home Care Case Study

Mr. Athens along with his family has decided to return home while he makes his transition as the doctors are unable to provide any additional care for his Alzheimer’s. Upon discharge the hospice nurse has a meeting with Mr. Athens and his family to discuss what they can expect and what services can be offered to them. The first of three interventions the nurse discuses with them is pain. Mr. Athens was previously involved in a motor vehicle accident which caused him to suffer from sever back pain. Although Mr. Athens is under the care of hospice it is important for him to be able to maintain the highest quality of life he can. The order from the physician is to administer Percocet 30mg every 4-6 hours as needed with an additional dose of 5mg if break through pain occurs. The second intervention the nurse discuses is caregiver role strain. The primary caregiver for Mr. Athens is his 81-year-old wife and while she has no significant health problems she will have to provide 24-hour care for him. If Mr. Athens pain is not being managed or if additional dose of medication is needed more than twice a day hospice will be contact so that Mr. Athens can be reevaluated. Home health care will come to the house daily and assist Mrs. Athens with the care of Mr. Athens 8 hours a day. If she is still feeling overwhelmed hospice will come out to reevaluate to see if additional hours can be added. The motor vehicle causes Mr. Athens to experience a lot of pain, occupational/physical therapy will come and work with him to help keep him mobile as long as possible. When this no longer becomes an option, hospice will come out and access Mr. Athens for any home devices he may be eligible
