Thinking and unfolding crumpled papers from my first three years here, I remember how horrific and terrifying the first day was. I specifically remember taking deep breaths in and out as the bus unloaded all the students. Before I had gotten on the bus, my mother stood on the porch outside, and I blew at least three kisses to her as I walked down the driveway, and she blew one last kiss to me before I turned around to hop up the steep stairs. By the middle of the day, I began to cry and tried to sneak out to the bathroom. I was crying because I had missed my mom, and the four hours I had been there were far too long. When I was in second grade, I had just finished my addition/subtraction test, and I walked up to Mrs. Lund right behind Hannah, and I patiently sat there until I was next. While we were talking, Mrs. Lund received a phone call and once she hung up her face had softened right away, and she looked down at me while her eyes pleaded with mine. “Jenna, I’m very sorry to tell you this, but …show more content…
Anderson. Ms. Anderson is somebody you would picture better as a friend, rather than a teacher. She is always so bubbly and cheerful whenever I see her, and she makes me want to be more like her. I desire to be bubblier and open to ideas, rather than uptight and stubborn. She has taught me how to become a more detailed writer, along with better grammar usage. Ms. Anderson is not the only one who has led me to be who I am today though. My friends, Jade, Tayler, and Priscilla have all shown me different ways to deal with problems, and if I hadn't gone to North Cape, then I wouldn't be who I am today. Every person at North Cape has influenced me one way or another, whether it be positive or negative. I am truly grateful to have had such an astonishing education here throughout my years with great role models and

Most of the American society follows a certain set of rules. There are social niceties that must be observed, and while there are variations depending on what area of the United States you live in, for the most part people value good manners, morals, and politeness when dealing with others. However, as Elijah Anderson’s book explains, there is a different set of rules for those who live in the inner city, and a different source of social capital, respect. Nothing is more important in the inner city than the concept of respect, and as Anderson explains a lot of the actions that seem foreign to those who live outside of the world of the inner city make sense when thought about in this context.…

Even things that a police officer does can effect the memory of a witness. The way a police officer handles a witness can affect the way their memory or the outcome of the identity of the suspect. In the Anderson case, police failed to conduct a proper photo spread lineup. As Clare (2012) stated all the photos should have similar lighting, size and shades of color (para. 1). In the Anderson case the photos were not similar, the majority were black and white.…

At Xavier University we believe in the “All for One and One for All” philosophy; showing that camaraderie and equality among all are still possible. One way Xavier lives up to its support for students is through the one-year long Smooth Transition mentoring program. I served as a smooth transition mentor to three incoming first-year students during the 2016-2017 academic year. In order to ensure that they have a successful first year at Xavier, I informed them about the resources Xavier University provides, including the writing center, mathematics lab, tutoring services, Ohio link, and much more. I also advised them to make good decisions and form relationships with people who would motivate them to succeed.…

I had a tough first day at Paul Quinn because I got an “F” on my first homework assignment. It was a homework assignment that took me at least three hours to write. When I, finally, finished writing and looking over the assignment, it was almost 2:00 a.m.. It was not about the time I spent on the paper that made me so upset. It was about the fact that I put a lot of effort and work…

Locked In! Elie Wiesel’s work, Night, published in 1958, demonstrates the struggles Jewish society and other minorities faced in order to live a life of liberty. I, myself, felt bound and trapped, not by iron doors, but by words. Although being open and outgoing can help communication growth, rudeness and unnecessary judgement can hinder one’s ability to socialize and express themselves.…

Have you ever had a moment when you realized you were wrong? If you have you can imagine how I felt when I found out the harsh truth about, in my opinion, one of the major issues that has been overlooked in this country. No one really thinks about it until you really need to, but it is bigger than the “black live matter” movement that is plaguing our country right now. Don’t worry, we still have time to change it just takes a handful of people to make a difference. I just need your eyes for a moment and you can lend us a hand in fighting this battle.…

As I open my eyes from the slumber of what seemed like an eternity, I quickly realized that today was the first day of going to a public middle school. There have been days when I was just dreaming about going to public school, being able to rant in the disruptive corridor to my friends about the test that was imminent in the next class as the late bell is virtually trying to blare through the black speakers in every classroom and in every corner of the hallway. It was these moments that I yearned for while leaning on my chair as it makes a displeasing noise that awakes the room as everyone waits for the teacher. Seconds feel like minutes as I anxiously tap the lead of my turquoise mechanical pencil into the wooden desk that has been scraped…

I remember my eighth grade year at Our Lady of Angels School quite warmly. The sense of community, the anticipation of graduating, and our upbeat classroom spirit are the first things I think of when I look back on my experiences there. Our eighth grade classroom may not look any different from standard classrooms; one wall displays a brilliantly bright whiteboard, the other holds windows which peer down onto the playground below, and various memos, posters, and particularly good assignments cover the remaining white walls. Outside, the bright afternoon sunlight glistens upon a square courtyard containing our lockers, lunch tables, and statue of Mary. However standard my classroom may seem, it is there that I felt a sense of comfort as I did my work, for the thirty-five students surrounding me…
