The quote, “No vivacious Bacchanalian flame leaped out of the pressed grape of Monsieur Defarge; but, a smouldering fire that burnt in the dark lay hidden in the dregs of it,” (170) acts as a fitting thesis for chapters 15 & 16 because of the chapters’ uses of characterization, foreshadowing, and imagery. It was shown that Mr. and Mrs. Defarge are preparing for the revolution; Mr. Defarge is in the process of getting names of those to be executed once it begins and Mrs. Defarge is keeping track of the names of who is going to be executed. It is shown how cunning and intelligent the two (especially Mrs. Defarge) are because he is great at gathering needed information for whether or not someone will be executed and she is able to read her own
