Amadeus Mozart Comparison

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart born in 1756 is one of history’s greatest composers and became a protégé at a young age. When he died in 1791 he had already composed numerous classical pieces that are still considered masterpieces today. In 1979, Peter Shaffer performed his play Amadeus that he fashioned after Alexander Pushkin short play called Mozart and Salieri. The film version came out in the 1980’s. The film is an adaptation of Mozart life and all his struggles as a prodigy, and the man who people admired, praised, and idolized. However, those who detested Mozart could not deny the significance of his work, his music, and his art form. In the beginning of the movie Amadeus Mozart is already a famous composer. People identify him as a great composer, but they don’t really know the real Amadeus behind music that they love. People like Antonio Salieri, who is the composer for the emperor Franz Joseph and the narrator of the story. Salieri only knew Mozart by his reputation until he met him. He had admired and respected Mozart’s compositions, and assumed him to be a man of elegance and charisma. However, Mozart turned out to be a joker. This deeply disappointed Salieri, because he found Mozart on his hands and knees engaging in sacrilegious language with his fiancé Constance Weber.

The Emperor calls Salieri the “brightest star” in Vienna musical life, but this does not satisfy Salieri. Deep down inside he knows that Mozart is greater and more talented.
