Mozart 5th Symphony Analysis

Decent Essays
Although I'm a big fan of operas I have been infatuated with Beethoven for quite some time, and his 5th symphony is my favorite classical composition next to Fur Elise. I can distinguish Symphony no. 5 as soon as the famous "short-short-short-long" motif begins in the string section, and even though I have heard this song countless times the changes in pace and volume take me on a roller coaster of emotions. Consisting of the four movements, Allegro con brio, Andante con moto, Scherzo Allegro, and Allegro, it's as if this song takes you through a story's highs and lows, and speeds up as the plot develops. In comparison, Mozart's Symphony 41 begins with a battle between piano and forte in the Allegro movement, which later flows into Andante

Symphony is a multi-movement instrumental work for an orchestra originating from the Italian Sinfonia, which was an instrumental prelude to large-scale vocal works such as opera and oratorio. Sinfonia comprises of 3 movements written at the tempo sequence of fast- slow fast. According to Dr. Nolan Gasser, the new trend of adopting opera sinfonia for concert use emerged in the 1720s and 30s and soon, composers such as Giovanni Battista Sammartini and Johann Stamitz began composing symphonies as an independent work. Three symphonies from Johann Stamitz, Joseph Haydn and Ludwig van Beethoven will be used in this paper to compare four elements –movement structure, length of the first movement, instrumentation and the compositional techniques used…

I would have to disagree, as I do not find Liszt to be "underrated". Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony may be the one everyone seems to prefer more often than usual, but that does not mean it is far more engaging than Liszt’s transcription. Each one has its strengths and faults. Beethoven manages to express the heroic proportions to it; while Liszt, compared to the full orchestral version, manages to work very well in adding a greater lyrical quality to the work on the piano.…

Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony is one of the most well-known symphonies ever written. The first movement is “fast with vigor”. The introduction is somewhat deceiving because it does not feel fast. The smoothness of it allows the listener to sit back and forget how quickly the music is progressing. It is not until the first half cadence from V/V to V that the listener feels how dynamic the movement is.…

Für Elise by Beethoven is the song that expresses who I am. When I started playing piano, I got frustrated that most of my family had a natural talent while I didn't. My father talked to me and gave me one of the most important lessons of my life: "Practice makes perfection, if you want something, insist until you get it". After playing piano as a hobby, at age 17 I decided to take my skills to the next level by taking piano lessons at college and I challenged myself to first learn how to play Für Elise. It wasn't easy, but practice made perfection.…

Sonata-allegro form Introduced during the classical period (1750-1820), sonata-allegro form became vastly used in most compositions. The three-section movement begins with the exposition, which leads into the development. The movement ends with the recapitulation, but often includes a following section referred to as the coda. The first fast movement of a string quartet, classical symphony, or sonata is typically in sonata form. Sonata-allegro form includes a great deal of significant music from the classical period.…

It is worth mentioning that most of the quotations are from large Symphonic works of composers who were living and writing concomitantly with Mahler. Berio himself in an interview assumes the emphasis placed on 20th century music, most specifically in the last one hundred years. Although the preference for modern works points towards a post-tonal harmonic structure, the majority of quotations are of a more moderate nature, such as Stravinsky, Ravel and Debussy rather than the full-blown atonality of Schoenberg, Webern and Boulez. To a certain point, it seems contradictory that an avant-garde composer such as Berio has emphasized most pre-serial works.…

The stance that Felsenfeld means toward "rebel music", I believe is when he talks about classical music. It defines who he was as a person and was also based on the type of music he finally enjoyed listening to. At first he felt like he was the only one who listened to this type of music, which made him love his abstract role in it even more. He couldn't believe that Beethoven was who he had judged so violently in the past as a kid. When he describes he's first time listening to Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, he says how it had a drug-like effect on him.…

Verdi's Requiem, Mendelssohn's Symphony No. 4 in A Major, and "The Mountain Whippoorwill" by Jess Turner are three very different pieces. The first is an opera with fantastic musical continuity accented by a broad spectrum of emotions. The second is an instrumental piece in the minor key, and it is very quick and lively. The latter is a longer piece than the first two, an instrumental like the second, but it is happen set to match a poem, which makes it somewhat similar to the first. Verdi’s Requiem has a lot of emotions from reverent reflection to joy and simplicity, Mendelssohn's Symphony is generally dance-like liveliness and a little apprehensive throughout, and Jess Turner’s piece is in every way a story with a rollercoaster of emotions.…

6 there were four pieces that were performed. Part one was called Allegro energico, ma non troppo, part two: Scherzo: Wuchtig (Weighty), part three: Andante and part four the finale: Allegro moderato – Allegro energico. The first movement (Allegro energico) to me had characteristics of a march and had a duple meter. This movement also has a melody that they call the “Alma theme” and is the happiest part of this symphony. In the second movement the scherzo is a slower movement and had a tranquil element while also emitting a darker mood.…

The Fifth Symphony in C minor is one of the best-known symphonies Beethoven composed in his middle period. As mentioned before, it carried a “heroic” style throughout the piece and it is well-known for using a simple four-note motive as a theme that reoccurs throughout the piece. He structured this composition in a way that developed the theme through “‘modulation,’ that is, a change in the feeling of the home key, through a variety of keys or harmonic regions” (Beethoven’s Musical Style and Innovation” par. 16). Although Haydn had used the same technique in his later works, Beethoven took a step further by innovating his style through “juxtaposing different keys and unexpected notes to join them” (Beethoven’s Musical Style and Innovation” par. 16).…

Johannes Brahms composed his Symphony No. 2 in D major, Op. 73, in 1877, while visiting a rural town in Austria. This composition is typical of Brahms’ works in that it is a mixture of classical form and more modern ideas. The first movement, Allegro non troppo, is in sonata-allegro form and in triple simple meter, this movement is filled with contradictions in mood and contrasting sections. The numerous contrasts between the different sections make the transitional material especially important in this movement.…
