Throughout the course of my short seventeen years, I have grown and learned many things. I grew up in a small rural town called Elk Creek. There are no strangers in Elk Creek; people sleep with their doors unlocked and their windows open. Everyone who has grown up in a small town can agree that friendship and community become a second nature trait. Although I have copious amounts of love and respect for where I grew up; I believe that I do not belong there.…
Schools closing, teachers going on strikes, budget cuts. These are all headlines that have been surrounding the Chicago Public School System over the last few years and especially this past October. In 2013 Mayor Rahm Emanuel approved the largest school closure in Chicago history by closing 48 elementary schools and one high school. This massive school closing is still affecting Chicago residents today. Children are being forced to take longer walks to schools through bad neighborhoods.…
Before the Hull-House era, the neighboring community of Chicago’s West Side showed an increasing demand for education. Compulsory education was not yet required in Chicago, which made education not a top priority for many families. Hull-House sought to change the corruption in the school system by providing a free alternative learning experience for everyone. Hull-House created programs where both children and adults could learn through different activities, clubs, and events. Not all of those who participated or lived at Hull-House were immigrants; people who were natural-born citizens were also involved in the activities and programs.…
What brought me to George Brown College is my dreams. First of all, I never thought of being a Computer Programmer in the future. When I was a child I always dreamt of being a Police officer, so that I can save and catch all the criminals in the world, but as I grew up and reach high school level my way of thinking changed. My desire of being a police officer disinterested me when I started living alone back in my third year of high school, I always feel lonely that every night I wouldn't sleep without crying. My aunt is coming home from work every weekend, so most of my weekdays after school I spend it at home alone and the only thing I have is my computer.…
Moving to Chicago in 2014 was the hardest thing I have ever done in my life. It meant leaving my life in Puerto Rico and beginning a new one. At first I didn’t get why we had to move and I resented my dad. I figured he didn’t care about us and only wanted to move for his own convenience.…

Growing up near Springfield, I have spent a great deal of time on the ISU campus. My grandma is an alum; my aunt played volleyball for ISU in the 80s and now works in the athletic department; and my cousin is a current presidential scholar. I have visited Illinois State University numerous times. I have even cheered on my high school Rockets in Redbird Arena at state tournaments and attended graduation ceremonies and athletics camps several summers. Being so familiar with the campus makes me excited to attend.…

I can say with confidence that I should be considered for a nomination for The United States Air Force Academy. I know that I would make an ideal cadet and I’ll tell you why. I may look like just another number, but I’m not just any student looking to go to the academy because my parents did or because I want paid college. I want to go to the academy because I am an engineering student and I found out the hard way that where you go to college really does make a difference.…

I just read this very interesting article about college and why students attend. The author, April Yee, made a few key points about why young adults, attending higher education. In the article April interviews 34 students from a large urban public university. She studied students who came from many different ethical and racial backgrounds. They was also an even split between them as males and females.…
Before I applied for college, my mom told me that if I got accepted into University of Chicago and another school, I should definitely choose the other one. That is because among the Chinese student society, the University of Chicago kind of has a notorious name. Although it offers one of the best undergraduate programs in this country, it is the environment that people can go into the campus anytime they like. And those would pose threat to students’ safety. Of course, the fact that it is located in Hyde Park-South Kenwood in Chicago which is the third largest city in the United States could, to some extent, justify the situation because due to the report by Chicago police, 228 violent crimes happened in that neighborhood on average between 2008 and 2013.…
To be honest, I hate school with a passion, yet I love learning as much as living. As a child, schooling created a feeling of loneliness and sadness that echoed throughout my life, even now. I didn’t meet the standard levels for literacy and was separated from my classmates in elementary school for special reading and writing classes. Also the lack of freedom to say and move the way I wished to, and the rebellion that stemmed out of me in middle school due to these limitations. Finally, the conforming in high school to appease my mother, friends that drove me over the edge, yet even now I feel the same bull-crap in college.…
