Conflict is bound to occur between two people, you just need to ask yourself how you are going to view the issue at hand. There had been many times throughout this year that problems had come up in friendships and relationships. I made the mistake of labeling some of the dilemmas as a threat. If something were to go awry, I felt as if it threatened the relationship. My mentality of that basically ruined the friendships, along with other factors.…

After reading Dawn, by Octavia Butler, the question arose on how humans are able to learn in a socially changing environment. In Dawn, a large group of humans were forced to adjust to an extraterrestrial lifestyle and figure out how to learn based on their surroundings and the limited information given to them. Based on research on neuroscience and adult learning, implicit and explicit memory, human motor memory, and how humans learn in a changing environment, it can be determined that the the brain is a social organ which learns through shared experiences. When it is placed in a socially changing setting, adults must learn to first explicitly accept the change so they can adapt to it and implicitly enhance their long-term memory storage.…

I am a prek teacher and with it, I like to do things "my way". I have an assistant and I take in her thoughts and opinions about a certain topic, but I feel I know how each and every child learns so I make her ideas fit their learning style. I like to do things fast-paces and it is difficult at times for my assistant to keep up. After reading about the way I learn and finding out the kind of learner I am, I find it satisfying to know that I might clash with others while finishing a project, assignment, or even just daily planning just by how we learn. Therefore, since I now have a reason for it, I can fix it before it gets out of control.…

The strongest person in the world might be able to tackle any physical obstacle, but mental stress can be much more difficult. The nuance with mental stress is that different environments affect people in different ways, and in different magnitudes. Cathy Davidson’s “Project Classroom Makeover”, Susan Faludi’s “The Naked Citadel”, and Malcolm Gladwell’s “The Power of Context”, all describe scenarios with environments that are either stressful and negative, or relaxed and positive. An individual’s identity is minimally impacted in positive environments and drastically affected in negative environments.…

How do you know the color of the shirt you are wearing? Can you be sure that blue is really blue? Our knowledge comes from many years of schooling and facts taught to us by our parents, teachers, and what we saw in books and media. We regurgitate these facts in our daily lives. When something different comes along, we may get uncomfortable and resist it.…

I really hate having disagreements within my marriage, and find that life is far too short to be at a constant disagreement with my husband. I got married for a purpose and I know it’s not to sit around and constantly bicker with him. Communications within a relationship can either make or break your relationship if you let it. I find that those that communicate well, most often have a successful relationship and those that withdraw from discussing issues, tend to fail, however, there are always a few exceptions.…

For this assignment I chose a newspaper entry from The New York Times with the title “The Changing American Family”. I learned in lesson 1 that there is no true “definition” of family until you come to the political part of it that has to do with rights, benefits, taxes and so on, instead it’s really to each is own. A family could be two parents, one child and a dog, or it could be a mother and her child, in this day in age having one parent or even an unrelated guardian is almost “common”. Many people are considered lucky to have their biological parents still together growing up. Twenty to thirty years ago, though, it was very much looked down upon to have divorced or separated parents, in fact some people today still look down on it whether…

And if someone was to metaphorically get hit with one of Cupid’s arrows, then their love of learning will be intense. Forcing someone to learn something that they dislike will be difficult, because they can’t grasp the concept effectively. Since their heart is not in it, the outcome won’t be as positive as it would be if someone was learning what they really desired. In Chimamanda Adichie’s “The Danger of a Single Story”, she realizes something about the books she read when she was younger. She says “Because all I had to read were books in which characters were foreign, I had become convinced that books, by their nature, had to have foreigners in them, and had to be about things with which I could not personally identify.…

Openness. I believe I am extremely open-minded, but I don’t actively seek out new experiences for the sake of participating in them. If my friend drops a bomb and suggests, “Hey, let’s go skydiving; I bought our tickets and booked everything for tomorrow morning,” I would welcome the idea. However, I would not go out of my way to put together an entire skydiving trip on a whim without telling anybody first. My openness is limited by rationality and priorities, as I am sure is the case for many other people.…
