Moving To College

My parents never received any college education and the highest education they were able to get was my mom a somewhat education while my dad never passed fifth grade. Due to having a low education they weren’t able to get a good job by only being accepted as factory workers in a meat company. I had always looked up to my parents as they were constantly encouraging me to graduate high school and move on to college since I am a first generation to nearly high school.

Before moving on to high school my parents went through a rough time. Just recently, the factory my dad had worked in shutdown, which left him unemployed. The only one supporting the family was my mom since my older sister was finishing up high school. My dad tried to look for jobs and he was able to find one outside of our town, yet the labor work was too much and his paycheck had always went to his gas, so he’ll be able to get to work. My dad later then quit the job and soon went to work with my mom in a meat factory. The meat factory did required labor work and overtime to the point where all my parents did on their day offs was sleep.

While watching my parents support me, despite their rough times, I felt confident that I would be able to graduate

Up to now I noticed that all those classes, activities, and awards weren’t for my counselor or parents, but to me. I worked hard to create a new future for myself through the long hours of studying and going out of my comfort zone in tough activities. Those long hours and challenging activities was able to shape me into a confident person and a hard worker. I’m thankful for having my supportive parents to help me create my dreams and even though my counselor had previously been racist towards me, I wouldn’t be able to challenge myself to break away from
