Who all has traveled out of state? Out of the country? Did it change your perspective on life? When I grew up in a town population of literally two, I was sheltered from reality. All my friends lived the same as me. We went to church on Sundays, had bonfires and BBQ’s on Friday nights, went to the pool on Saturdays… life was perfect and I felt protected and safe. On Maslow’s Hierarchy of needs, I was pretty close to self actualization. This all changed, though, when I moved to the other side of the country and lost all my safety and essentially everything that I knew in life. Once I moved away, I started understanding my culture, and I started letting go of the typical stereotypes and false beliefs. Traveling helped me to get to know myself better. Once I moved back to Nebraska, it was hard hanging out with my best friend who has lived in the same town all her life, and hardly ever traveled outside of the state, nor did she have the desire too. She constantly judged people by their actions, race, income, or family situation because she was used to being around white, middle class, Christian families. It’s important to educate yourself to understand the diversity of society. She now lives in Omaha and is struggling in her works-place because she’s around so many different people than herself. Furthermore, traveling enhances you not only personally, but it has its educational perks. I will also add that once I visited Africa, I have also been much more grateful for the basic things that I have in life such as having clean water, a healthy family, a warm home, and a proper education.
